I would keep looking. We had a large cake for our wedding but I know our baker did smaller cakes. What bakery cant make you a cake the size you want? If nothing else try whole foods!
Although I don't understand do you want a small cake to cut for "show" and a sheet cake in the back? This is very common. I'm not sure I would call it a cake for the wedding party - when they cut it - it all gets distributed to guests together.
Also I'm not an expert but I know there are places that do "fake stand in cakes". They're styrofome for display only. Most bakeries have them in their store front. You can rent those!
Yes, I would like a small cake to cut for show but those pieces would be distributed to the wedding party... bridesmaids, groomsman, and parents. Eveyone else will get the sheet cakes in the back. I'll try whole foods too.. thanks for the tip.
Where in CA are you? That might help us as CA is pretty big. :)
Why don't you try phrasing it on the phone different if the bakeries are giving you such a hard time. Maybe try saying you are having an anniversary party and need a small cake modeled after a wedding cake or something. I feel like as soon as you take the word wedding out of the equation people drop the price and always a lot more willing to negoiate with you. But keep trying you'll find a bakery somewhere! Around here (Portland Maine) We have tons of small bakeries that are awesome and love doing odd jobs, so i'm sure there are some out there in CA.

I can't seem to find a bakery that will make a small wedding cake for just the wedding party. I thought I found one and the lady was really nice. Unfortunately, I ended up talking with her boss today to schedule another time to meet and discuss my cake idea and the lady gave me the brush. "Oh we don't do that. Go get your cake at safeway then if you want a cake that bad." Thanks for making me feel really small lady on the phone. This is the second bakery I've talked to that has given me that kind of attitude for wanting to save money. All the budget websites I've found have recommended getting a smaller cake for the wedding party and a sheet cake somewhere else. Where do you find bakeries that are willing to do that? :(
