I sent my cake vendor a picture of the cake design that I am interested in and she noted that she could make this cake with no problem.  I received the invoice for the cake today and she mentions that the 5-tier cake will consist of the following:

    4 inch high Top Layer

    2 inch high Layer

    4 inch high Layer

    2 inch high Layer

    4 inch high Bottom Layer

I almost freaked!  Does this seem ridiculously small to anyone except me?  In total, the cake will be only 16 inches tall?!?

Any feedback on standard cake layer heights is much appreciated....

Well in the pic it looks rather large, however 2' and 4' is not that big at all.  But how many people will it feed?

Consider it this way: a normal cake layer is usually about 2 inches, depending on your cake pan. So each four inch layer would be about the height of a 2 layer layer cake. That's a pretty tall cake, my concern would be more about the shape and width of your layers. She should be able to tell you how many people it will feed.

One other thing... the cake she mentioned does sound shorter than the cake you posted. That top layer especially looks larger than 4".

I agree the top layer looks like it should be taller than the other heights listed.  I would call her and ask if she noticed that in the picture.

I'm not sure what is standard, but 16'' does seem REALLY small.  The cake in the pic appears to be a lot taller.  If you'd like it to be taller, maybe you can ask her to make it in different dimensions??
