I've never seen anyone in a real wedding I've attended use a cake stand... they usually just use a big plate/platter. They're lovely, but not necessary if they are stressing you out!
i tried looking for what i thought i wanted.. mum came up w/ a brilliant idea - just pay the baker another $40 (that's what a cakestand would cost to buy / rent anyway) and have them make another layer so the cake will look bigger.
Our venue just has a crate type thing that they cover with the linen so it's elevated, but eliminates the need for a cake stand! No real need for one in my opinion!
Yeah.. I guess it's more of a silver platter that she's offering to rent out. The problem I'm running into is finding something large enough to fit it on. I haven't really stressed about it yet, but I'm not having any luck so far.
I've seen both and I actually adore a pretty cake stand. It makes the whole thing pop. Maybe if you go look at the stand, it will help you swallow the cost.
Have you asked the baker if you could do without one - or if they have an alternative (ie: FREE!) suggestion?
I would just pay it, but that's me. If you can't find one you like and you want a cake stand, they're your best bet. Now, I am not opposed to a cake on a cake board on the table, so if that doesn't bother you, just go with that.
beagle, if you really want a cake stand, i had a florist suggest he could make me one:
they'd take really sturdy styrofoam (a single thick piece) and cover the sides with flowers so it'll look like the cake is sitting on a bed of flowers. if you're using a flower topper that might work instead of a silver cakestand
I did a cake stand - I dont think its a must have but it did make our cake more of a focal point because it was raised about 6-8 inches off the table. $45 isnt bad for a rental either so I say go for it if you like it :) If not, at least have a cake board to put the cake on if you dont do a stand, but Im sure the bakery has that.

I'm about to drive myself nuts with looking for a cake stand. Our baker is offering to "rent" us one for $45... which I can't bring myself to fork over. Did anyone not have a cake stand?
