My MIL's friend is throwing a reception for her son and his wife who got married awhile ago and since I did a lot of the things at my wedding a few months ago she asked me if I would make things for their reception (escort cards, table numbers, etc). One of the things she is insisting on is doing a decorated cake stand. Apparently she bought a cake stand that she wants me to decorate but here is the problem... I don't even know them! I have no idea what they are in to and MIL's friend gave me no other theme than purple. I haven't asked her what color the cake will be yet... clearly you wouldn't want a purple cake stand AND a purple cake.

The only thing I could think of as a DIY cake stand would be something like doing a collage of family photos, or go to Michael's and get some cover paper and do something with the edges... no idea really though. Anyone have any photos or ideas of cake stands that could be a DIY?

Not to sound stupid, but do people even see the cakestand...? I think I've only seen silver cake stands that are just an inch or two high with the cake on top.

I totally agree. Probably the one thing I was not concerned about at all during the reception planning was the cake stand. Hence the reason why I am completely lost on how to decorate one lol

Given that you can't get more detailed info, what about wrapping a nice ribbon around the cake stand in purple?

You could get some fabric in the wedding color, and just put it over an upside down cake pan that was as large as the bottom layer, with the edges just going outward over the table.  The cake itself would go onto a cardboard round on top of the stand.  Simple, inexpensive, and maintains the theme.

Or if the cake itself is purple, you might want to use just a plain white cake stand.  Here is a tutorial on DIY cake stands that may be helpful.
