So originally we were going to have my moms friends do our cake. She is just starting a cake business (small) from her house. The price is great and she will do whatever we want.

But then i had second thoughts about the look. She has about 30 cakes on her website but most are birthday cakes and they are really good but i didnt see any like perfect fondant looking cakes.

So i went cake tasting and all the places have beautiful cakes that look like just what i want but they are about 300 more and dont taste as good as her cakes.

My mom took a fondant class from her friend and swears she can so square fondant cakes perfectly.

I am just worrying for nothing. Should I go to the cheaper better tasting place and take a risk.

The more layers the more difficult.  You could always go with the bakery for the tiered cake and get your friend to make sheet cakes to serve, but it looks like you want a BIG tiered cake so it probably isn't worthwhile.

I went with an excellent bakery.  My cake didn't look very good.  I paid a lot for it.  My advice would be to go with the friend if it tastes great, but you might need to scale it down a little.

Actually I should have mentioned that we are only doing three tiers and my florist is doing the flowers.

As a guest, I only really care about the taste.

Go with taste!  After paying all that money you want your guests to eat and enjoy their cake, not look at a beutiful cake but end up throwing their slice out because it isn't tasty.

Think of your guests! They won't remember if it was perfect looking, and if it looks good and tastes great it will be a lot better than if it looks good and tastes terrible.

Well, I just heard from my mom that this woman is going to be teaching fondant classes at Michael's so maybe i am worrying about nothing! Maybe it will look stunning and she can add it to her portfolio

Get a cake that tastes good. Why pay money for something that looks good but tastes like @$$? :)  OK, maybe not like ass. I haven't met a cake really that's been that bad. :D

    Taste for sure!

Maybe you could ask her to do a cake trial with 1 small layer covered in fondant and with the bow detailing like your inspiration photo...

I agree with the others, taste always wins! There's nothing more disappointing then a beautiful cake that's dry and gross.

I'd go with taste. You you may be pleasantly surprised with how the cake looks.

I went with taste and didn't regret it.  My maid of honour makes cakes for fun and did mine.   It turned out even better than expected!

    @lefeymw: Yep, this.

Plus, buttercream frosting is totally in right now. I'm using buttercream and having FMIL, who is making the cake, give it an on-purpose textured look so that I don't end up with a cake that is trying (and failing) to look like fondant perfection. Embrace the quirk and enjoy the taste, IMO.

Hands down taste. My sister's cake looked beautiful, but didn't taste good~so was disappointing. Plus you know this person, so they are going to try really hard to give you what you want for your wedding day.

I am in the SAME boat and will be going with the woman who is cheaper and makes delicious cakes. I am toning down my cake decor choice a bit to be sure I can get taste AND a bit of look.

    Absolutely taste!

We did a modest, simple design with floral on top, and while the design didn't "WOW" me in the way other designs did, our cake tasted AMAZING. Everybody was really pleased with it, and nobody came up and said "Ugh, your cake wasn't very pretty"

Also, one of my favorite wedding cakes I've had was at a wedding where they just had 3 teeny cakes to cut, and then behind it they had all the cupcakes in boxes (it was outdoors).

The display wasn't elaborate or really even that eye catching, but the cupcakes were SO delicious.

Taste is the most important. But any good baker will be able to make a pretty cake that tastes yummy too.
