I am thinking of using cakes as centerpieces - has anyone done this, thinking of doing it or been to a wedding where this was done?

My main hesitation is that i want chocolate cake, but didn't really want brown as one of my wedding colours, so if i put a chocolate cake on each table will that take over the whole colour scheme for the reception?

I am looking at ways to keep costs down and this would cover cake and centerpieces and i wouldn't have to pay a cake cutting fee.  Plus i think it would be kinda of neat to have a table cut into and share their own cake.

My FMIL has THE BEST chocolate cake receipe on earth, so i was thinking if she made 5 cakes, i made 5 and my mom made 5 a day or 2 before the wedding, we could have homemade cakes for each table - is that just crazy thinking that we would get that done a couple days before the big day?

i think it would look really cute- but i would just want to make sure that you have enough time to be baking cakes a couple of days before the wedding. keep in mind you'll probably have family in town, be getting your nails done, rehearsal dinner, etc. it might get stressful to have to bake 5 cakes!

on a cake decorators forum i frequent they were discussing this the other day and there were a few cakers against it but i really liked the idea.

fyi, some of the negatives were that guests at the table didnt realize it was ok for them to cut the cake so some cakes went untouched while other guests felt like they had to barter with other tables to get a cake flavour that they actually liked. oh, and some guest thought it was a mock cake so stuck fingers in it before realizing it was a real cake to be eaten but one caker (she was contracted to do the cakes) said that the bride & groom took the opportunity to visit ever table and cut the cake with that table to this way the got to speak to each guest

me.. i like the idea so goodluck!

My high school BFF did this and when she and her husband were cutting their cake there was an announcement that the oldest married couple at each table should have the honor of cutting their table's cake. It was really cute. I think there was an (inexpensive) cake server at each table too that was the couple's to take home at the end of the evening. She made cake stands by flipping over a goblet and using a clear glue to affix a clear plate on top of it too. Underneath the 'bowl' part of the goblet was a battery powered tea light so it would glow too.

i think this is such a great idea!! im going to steal it, except i am doing cupcakes!! my only question is, will it look weird to have an empty cake stand on the table after everyone eats? i will probably decorate mine with flowers...but i dont want it to look empty after the cupcakes are all gone!!

My favorite MSW feature was of a couple who used cakes as centerpieces. Their cakes were all fondant extravaganza-ness, but I think any cute round cake will have the same AH! effect. I actually prefer the look of homey, delicious buttercreamy cakes to perfect fondant. When I get engaged, this is definitely an idea I may use.

MSW real wedding with cake centerpieces.

Thanks guys - your feedback is much appreciated!!

kb112022 - i figure by the time the cake is done everyone will be on the dance floor so empty cake platters won't matter.  Also at my reception space, we are moving across the hall for the dance/drinks part of the evening, so i don't want to spend $500 or more on centerpieces people will only see for 2-3 hours..

My friend did cakes as centerpieces.  Flowers were just too expensive for a 300 person wedding.  You can color chocolate icing to a certain extent and you may want to experiment with that.  What are your colors?  You could just add a lot of your color around the cake with flowers or candles so that the brown cake doesn't take over the color palette.

mrs m - that is kind of what i thought to, i dont expect people to be sitting at tables after we are done eating, so i dont think it will be an issue for me either!! i want to see your pictures if you decide to do this!

I think it sounds great!  What about fresh flowers or other decorations to help it tie in to your colors?  Or white chocolate icing?

I love eloping's mention of cutting the cake with each table too...so sweet!  Good luck, I hope it works out.

fanatic888 - my colours are different shades of purple and very light yellow as an accent.

I think if i go with the cake centerpiece idea (which i am strongly leaning towards after all the positive comments!) i will put some flowers on top (probably tulips) and not worry about everything matching perfect.  Chocolate cake is something i have always said i would have at my wedding and what is better than one chocolate cake?   15!!  :)

I'm planning on doing this for my wedding too! My fiance has recently become an avid woodworker, so we're planning on making the cakestands ourselves and giving them away either at the end of the night or the next day to people who have helped us with the wedding.

Has anyone been to a wedding where each table had a different cake flavor? Maybe even a couple pies or cheesecakes mixed in? My FMIL attended a wedding like that and said it was a great icebreaker to mingle and try different flavors. But I'm worried it might be a logistical nightmare.

Our reception will be outdoors during the summer. Should I worry about the cakes melting? Melty cakes are extra tasty, but not as pretty.

I am also doing cakes as center pieces since I will have a 500 plus person wedding guest list and don't want to make 40 plus centerpieces.  I am planning on placing flowers on top of each cake for a little decoration.  I am doing 4 differnt flavors throughout the guests tables.

I am doing the longest married couple also cuts the cake.  We will make mention of it, but also I will have a ribbon tied to the server explaining this.

Also if you need to find cake servers, I found this link below.

Love the idea and it worked really well at our reception!  Here's the link to my plans.  I don't have a pic of how it all turned out yet, but I'll def. be recapping it.  We didn't actually have people cut them at the tables though, our waitstaff took them back and cut them (no cake cutting fee) and people then could eat as many pieces as they wanted.

@ jennybirdy - I love the idea of cutting and serving the cake to the guests, but how many guests did they have?  I have 550 on the invite list, and know they obviously all won't show but I am sure I will still have at least 40 tables.

This is what we are doing as well!!

Accept we will be using glass cake stands with glass dome lids, and have a different cake/dessert in each one. After our main course, We will be called to the dancefloor for our first dance, at which point att the desserts will be pulled off the tables and assembled on a dessert buffet.

    Dance ends.

    Dessert and coffee buffet opens.

    Program over.

    Dancing and cocktails.

Um... one BIG question - are you going to be baking these yourselves?

Reason I ask is I remember one wedding show epsiode where the bride did this and it turned out to be a complete nightmare.  It took so long to bake and decorate the cakes, then having to transport them over (one was dropped), she was so miserable and exhausted that it ended up really taking away from her day.

I think the idea is lovely in theory, but if you are going to be doing this yourself, turning your kitchen into a bakery (huge mess), and transporting all of these yourself (even with the aid of moms, sisters, bridesmaids, etc), it looks far more work than its worth.

    Just a thought.

I LOVE IT! Let me tell you, as a wedding guest and a connoisseur of all things cake, NOTHING would make me happier than to see a cake centerpice right in the middle of the table I was about to sit at. Because that means, I am only sharing it with maybe 8 other people VS. the rest of the guests at the wedding LOL.

    Me no share cake well.

@ Soon to be Wiltgen: I wish I knew how many guests they had.  I only know of this couple bc they used my photographer and I stalk her blog!  I'm thinking that they had a small wedding though.

40 cakes is going to get pretty pricey for you.  Unless you and some family members bake the cakes yourselves?  Also, I don't know if you'll have enough time to serve up all the cakes with such a large guest list!  Maybe you could put a note on each table that tells guests they can serve themselves after dinner.

It is such a cute idea; I hope you can work it in!

Mrs. Louboutin - I was thinking of making the cakes myself, or at least some of them (the wedding is still almost a year and a half away so i have lots of time to reconsider this)

We will have about 15 tables, so i thought i could split the cake making with my FMIL, or if we each did 5 cakes and then bought 5 more in a different flavour.

I am aware of the craziness of all of this, but i also love my chocolate cake.  Maybe sanity will kick in over the summer ;)

As a dessert lover, I think cake centerpieces is a great idea, especially if you can get tasty cakes in your colors! Using family recipes is both economical and a nice touch. Plus, you know the cakes are fresh and they taste good! Michaels and JoAnn's have Wilton classes that may help you with the decorating.

I took the begginer's course and baked the cakes for my aunt's small wedding. My roses came out a little more like carnations Laughing, but it was ok, because everyone thought the cakes were yummy.

I'm thinking about doing attempting Embarassed something like this for our wedding:

What about making cupckaes for each guest at the table and you could place them in an upside down wine glass (super cheap from IKEA etc) and then a coloured votive/candle on top. I feel like you will hit ALL the birds with one huge gorgeous stone!! *laugh*

You get romantic lighting, cute centerpieces, once the cupcakes are eaten you still have a nice area left with a soft romantic glow!!

Here is a pic of what i am thinking, but they have flowers in theres.

If not I have also added some other inspiration pics :)
