ALL of California gets cooler/foggy at night for most of the summer. The later in the summer you are, the warmer and less foggy it will be. Fog usually rolls in around 5-6 pm and burns off 10 am-ish, depending on the day. No matter where you are, you will need a light jacket/sweatshirt/fleece and jeans at night, but the weather should be warm once the fog burns off in the morning. You will definitely be able to swim in the ocean by that time, although it won't be like the east coast. :o) September has by far the best weather of the year - it is seriously a gorgeous month. My husband and I were there last summer during the dates you mention (got married September 5) and the weather was wonderful. Let me know if you need anything else.
Hi there! SF can be really cold and foggy during the summer. As Mark Twain said, "the coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." But towards the end, it may be a little bit nicer. There are SO MANY good places to eat in SF. I literally don't even know where to start in listing them! (I lived there for four years, and miss it SO MUCH!) Definitely check out the dim sum in China town.
The rest of your trip should be warm and beautiful. Driving down the 101 would be absolutely beautiful at this time. Santa Barbara is a great place to stop.
What are you planning on doing on your trip?
I know that where we are (Central California) August is HOT. It's usually over 100 degrees. It does cool down some at night though. September is a gorgous month! By the coast I think that it will be warm but comfortable, sounds like fun!
Yay, thanks for the info ladies!
@septcabride: I'm sure the ocean in CA will feel balmy compared to the icy Atlantic, lol.
@LeahP: I have heard that about SF, hence my concern! But it sounds like it should be okay toward the end of the month. That's exactly what we're planning on doing--driving down the 101. We don't have any specific stops set right now, we just know we want to spend a few days in Napa, a few days in Sf and a day or two in LA. Other than that, we'd love suggestions!
@Running Elley: Yikes, that is warm. but am i correct in thinking that it's more dry heat than humidity? I can handle heat--it's humidity that kills me!

DH and I are hoping to take a trip to CA at the end of the summer. We've never been and want to fly into San Fran and then drive down the coast to LA. We're thinking to go Aug 26-Sept 5th. Can anyone give me any insight into what the weather will be like then? I'm mostly concerned about northen Cali, since I"ve heard it can get cool/foggy during late summer?
Also, if anyone has suggestions of places to stay/things to see/restaurants, that would be great too! :)
