you keep your SSN. It’s a cross-america source of identification.

If CA is anything like MO, they took my old card, issued me a temporary paper one for the time being, then i got my new one in the mail. Same SSN, new name.

My SSN was given to me in Cali cuz i was born there. I am pretty darn sure your SSN doesn’t change as it’s like your citizen blueprint.

My number stayed the same, but they took my card and ripped it up right in front of me and I had to wait a few weeks for the new card to come in the mail.

Man, I think it should become a rule that once you memorize your SSN you should rip up your card and never worry again lol

What if you don’t have your card on you? I agree with GaBGal and I have my SSN memorized. I think my card may be buried somewhere at my parents’ house. Do I need to bring the physical card to change my name?

Yes you need your card but you can apply for a lost one for now. call and check. i was told i *had* to have mine.

And a lot of times i’ve had to show my  social security card for work and stuff.

I think it depends on which office you go into on whether or not they’ll take (or even ask to see) your card.  At our local office, I filled out the paperwork, brought in my driver’s license, birth certificate, and marriage license, and they changed everything for me without even asking for my old card.  I still have it; I’m just waiting for the new one to come in the mail.  You should call your office to be sure of what documents you’ll need.

I think everyone gets to keep their old number, though, no matter where you go to change it.

At the office I went to I didn’t need my old card- in fact I’ve never had a SS Card as an adult. I just showed my driver’s licence and marriage certificate.

I will add that the DMV that I went to said that I had to have my new name on my marriage certificate. If I didn’t, they would have sent me back to the County to get a new certificate. So make sure you fill out your marriage certificate correctly.

I did it all via the mail (I wasn’t in a rush), and still have the SSN with my old name on it, too.

I was issued a new SS card that arrived in the mail about 1-2 weeks later (I went to the Brea office).  I dont even have an old SS card, it was stolen a few years ago with my wallet (I know I know I shouldnt have had it in there!), and I never got a replacement one.
