I really had my heart set on having summer engagement photos for our May 2013 wedding — I figured that tan with pixie hair would be a great contrast to how I will look in May, grow my hair out out all the way from E-pics to wedding and also I will be pale in May (I don’t do tanning).
Long story short, took awhile to get photographer chosen and now the earliest we will get them taken is first week of November. Now I won’t be tan, my hair can’t be short, I can’t wear a dress I will be in some big bulky jacket instead. All the tree leaves will be gone but no snow yet (probably) so nothing pretty to be in them. So basically I am really down on them and very unsure if they will be able to turn out even a little bit nice….Just going to be a cold pale girl with in-between hair (you know that hair when your old haircut is grown out too much!) in a jacket in front of some dead trees 🙁
I am wondering if I should just call off the engagement pics all together. I can do Christmas card STDs with no picture or try to find an old one that might look okay.

@Solstice: Rather than cancel them, rethink them. Consider a hairstyle that suits your current length, maybe have it styled at a salon to give it that extra edge. Choose a color that flatters your skin or spring for a spray tan. And why not think about the possibility of having your pictures shot someplace else? Think of your style, maybe ask your photographer for some location suggestions. It’s not that you can’t have pics and have great pics, you just need to envision them in a different way.

Is there somewhere inside that you could take pictures, like an indoor garden, art museum, museum of history, etc,? Maybe somewhere that is decorated for Xmas?
Perhaps you could wear a cute winter-y dress with boots and tights (check out Boden, they have lots of cute corduroy dresses that would be warm. Or maybe get a nicer winter jacket?

No way, don’t cancel them!
I would just find a stunning indoor venue. Or, assuming the weather is compliant where you are in early November- google Fall engagement pics, or pinterest them. There are sooo many unique ideas that would never have crossed your mind until you see them!

I cancelled mine because I ran out of time and I also wanted fall photos. I am postponing until next fall and instead I am doing newlywed photos — which defeats the purpose I KNOW but I don’t care. I never was going to use my engagement photos for anything (like STDs or whatever) I just want fun fall photos with my beau. I think PP have good ideas.

Even real tans on caucasian people rarely photograph well in this photographer’s opinion. I wouldn’t cancel your engagement photos.

Can you find a new photographer for engagement shots? Or a friend to take pictures for you?

Well, I am encouraged to see for the most part people think I should go through with them….so follow-up question, should I change the venue?
The reason I ask is it was going to be really neat that we were doing the photos at this beautiful old farm that we bought, which also happens to be on a lake. Farming has been the dream I have been working toward my whole life so getting these beautiful picutres together as we start our new life together on the farm was the idea. Still worth switching venues?
Weather in MN in November — tree leaves are already totally gone and raked up. Less than 10% chance of having snow on the ground. Average high is 48 degrees. 33% chance of sunshine. 0% chance of me going outside without a coat, hat, pants and mittens.

I love photographing pale skin! 😀 Im with Continuum on the tan skin.. Do the shoot IMO. I also love cute mittens and a scarf in photos, I think bundling up will make some cute photos, you will rock it no matter what you do.
The FH and I are buying farm land too! I feel ya. 😀 I cant wait to grow my field of sunflowers!

The photographer just emailed me and said he can’t make it out for at least a few more weeks. This makes it November 12th the absolute earliest we can have our photos.
November stats in Minnesota — high 40 degrees, 20% chance of snow on the ground. No leaves left on the trees, just bare branches.
I am upset because he promised us that if we decided to wait for him instead of booking someone else, that he would find a way to make it work for us. Now it sounds like that is in jeopardy. I feel betrayed…
1. Should I cancel engagement photos?
2. Should I get someone else to photograph the wedding? Or will they all be book ed up for May? I know this photographer had the option of doing someone else’s wedding, but turned them down to do ours. Then again, I gave up my engagement photo ideas because he promised he would make them work for us and now he isn’t.

Can you do e-pics with someone else? That is what we did and it worked out great.

Do you think anyone else can do it in less than two week’s notice? We don’t know anyone else so we would just be picking someone random from the internet. Makes me worried about quality…

I think if you cancel them, you’ll regret it.
Get them done!
There are plenty of cute winter outfits out there!

Betrayed? The sounds a bit harsh. I’m sure the photographer wasn’t trying to betray you- especially if they turned a wedding down to do yours. I don’t make any excuses for people’s poor communication but the 12th isn’t that far off. What about the potential of doing some of the photos indoors?

What if you did them outside on your farm still, but just get a cute colourful coat – hat scarf and mitts…
I had friends who did that and had a camp fire type of thing with hot cocoa and marshmallows, wrap yourselves in a blanket… You could even have a cute little outdoor xmas tree decorated in the background.
It might not be what you envisioned… but I’m sure you can find a way to make it completely beautiful.
I was supposed to be doing mine tomorrow, but my photographer heard that I was having doubts and cancelled us altogether, so now we have to wait til next year, find a new photographer, and most likely change our location for our e-pics because most are going to charge and arm and leg to go where we want to go. Basically, I’m just saying things change, but you can always make it work – and work well!!
