A friend of mine just asked me if I would be willing to do the calligraphy for her co-worker’s wedding invitations. I am an artist and did all of my own addressing for my invites last year, but I have never done this for anyone else before as a job. I have no clue what to quote her… can anyone give me an idea of what they have been quoted per envelope so I have a starting point?

This is coming out of left field, but I would figure out what it would be worth to me per hour to give up my free time, and then I would try to guage how much time it would take to do her invites. Or you could charge her per envelope…If you looked at Etsy vendors, I bet they would give you some ideas of what the going rate for calligraphy is.
Or, and maybe this is out of th question for you, could this be your wedding gift to the couple?

I was quoted $1 an envelope, which I thought was a steal. Our wedding isn’t going to be that formal though, so we’ll print directly on the envelope. (Also, we’re not having an inner envelope…)
Hope that helps!

Thanks I was thinking along the lines of a $1, that seems pretty fair for something I don’t actually do professionally. I don’t know the couple, but I would assume they are expecting to pay at least this.

I paid $3 per set of inner and outer envelopes and thought this was a good price. I think $1 is definitely a steal. I think you could charge $1.50 to $2 easily.

Yeah, I think charging between $1 and $2 would be fair. My calligrapher was $1.20 for outer envelopes only, or $1.60 for both inner and outer.

I am paying 1.50 per envelope for the outer envelope only. The going rate I found was close to $3.00!!! I am sure a 1.00 an envelope would be a steal in Connecticut.

I was quoted $1.50 for the outer/inner envelope addressing.
She also designed my invite, the rsvp postcard with info on the front and back and did a return address for the back of my outer envelope. These four pieces cost me $100 which I thought was awesome! I am just going to make copies of her pieces and print them myself.

Ours were $1.50 with the address and the return address. No inner envelopes.
Our placecards were .75 each which included the name and the table name.
