I found out today that I will be going to a conference in San Diego for work in February. Since the conferece is the week of Valentine’s Day, SO is going to fly out with me and we’re going to extend the trip a day or two.
Neither of us have been to San Diego before. Heck, neither of us have been even remotely close to California before! So I’m looking for any suggestions you guys have on places to go, things to see, where to eat, etc.
We’re coming from the east coast and should be arriving on Tuesday the 11th. I need some suggestions for SO while I’m working. He scuba dives and also does a lot of photography but I’m sure he’s open to any exploring you bees reccomend! I’m guessing my work day will end around 4 or 5 each day so that leaves plenty of time for us to roam around in the evenings. Where should we go? What should we do? We’ll probably fly out late Saturday or sometime Sunday. What goes on in San Diego on the weekends?
I’m pretty excited about this trip. The conference is actually something that I’m pretty interested in and I get to see new sites and spend the holiday with SO! It’s a win win!

San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park are both AMAZING.The zoo is also in Balboa Park, which has a ton of museums, historic buildings, and botanic gardens.
La Jolla has great tide pools, beautiful cliffs, and good restaurants.
Torrey Pines State Reserve/Ste Beach is a wonderful place to hike and take pictures.
There are a lot of kelp forests for diving!
Off shore fishing is also really popular.
There’s no shortage of stuff to do. There’s no way for him to get bored!

@just_another_dandelion: Man there is TONS to do in San Diego. My SO is from there so we go down maybe once a month to visit his family but we always make a date night out of it too.
Some of our favorites:
- Brunch at Eclipse in SouthPark (amazing food- but to be fair, our friend owns it so I might be a little biased!)
- Walk/drive around Balboa Park (also a ton of museums and great architecture)
- Gaslamp district for dinner/drinks
- Coronado for bonfire/beach

@just_another_dandelion: I love Old Town even though it’s super touristy. Cafe Coyote is one of my favorite places to eat just for the tortillas and the margaritas. They have people making the tortillas by hand all day.
Balboa Park, as PP said, is an absolute must see. It’s beautiful and there’s so much to do.
Sea World is cool if you’ve never been there before. I haven’t been since I was a kid but I know a lot of people who still enjoy it as adults.
The Gaslamp District has tons of bars and restaurants, it’s where most of the nightlife is. I’m not a nightlife kind of person but I hear it’s lots of fun if you enjoy that kind of stuff.
Coronado is a cute place to walk around. I like going to the Hotel Del Coronado just to see it. It’s really pretty (and allegedly haunted).
Oh! One thing in San Diego that I absolutely love is the Cinema Under the Stars. Not sure if they do it in February, but it is awesome.

Thanks! I’m so excited that there’s a lot to do. We live in a more rural area in southern Virginia where there just isn’t much to do so it’s going to be a pretty fun trip I think.
I’m making a list so keep the suggestions coming!

I’m originally from San Diego, but now living on the east coast… I would totally second recommendations on Torrey Pines (especially close to sunset) and the Zoo. I would also recommend Coronado Island/Hotel Del and Balboa Park!

It starting to sound like we can’t go wrong no matter what we do.

@just_another_dandelion: No, I don’t think so! There is so much to do and there are plenty of fun places to visit! My fiance has loved going back to San Diego with me!

I just received confirmation of our hotel accomodations so my excitment is revved up. Any more suggestions on what to do while we are there?
We will be getting there Monday afternoon (2/10) and leaving sometime Saturday morning or mid-day (the 15th). Any suggestions on how to celebrate Valentine’s day while we are there??

I second Old town. I love that place! and Balboa park too.
On my last visit home I went to the Cabrillo Monument on Point Loma and it is seriously gorgeous there!
Eat at In-n-Out burger if you’ve never been there before!
Have fun! So jealous!!!
