Hi all! I hope wedding planning is going great! I’ve still got a while to go, but I am a planner, so I’m trying to put ideas together. I’d like to make welcome bags for all my guests (1/family) for my destination wedding in Ft Lauderdale, FL.
I have a couple of questions:
A) Does anyone know of any cheap totes that I could use? I would prefer maybe the thin, canvas ones that I could paint. Since I can’t really do my own decorations and things, I would like to DIY as much as I can. We are only having about 17 people, so about 11 bags total, so I dont mind having to put some time into them. Any ideas? Any pictures you have would be nice.
B) What are good things that “scream” FL/Beach wedding? I’m thinking O.J., water with personalized labels, maps etc, and then I’d like to incorporate something FL related. Any suggestions on that would be greatly appreciated. Also, we are going to have two kids (around 11 yrs old) coming and I’d like to make them their own bags. Any ideas on things or activities I can include???
C) I have to fly to the hotel, so what things should I buy ahead of time vs when I get there????
Thank you so much!!!!

I’ve lived in FL for almost 9 years now so my suggestions are:
I’m not sure if any of these fit what you’d like but they all scream FL to me! I would think you could find flip flops duirng the summer, I’ve heard Old Navy has a good sale, Target, Walmart, not sure what quality you would want.
Seashells, I would check online if you wanted to do that ahead of time. Or you could get small bottles and get shells and sand from the beach if you are close enough and have time. That could be a cool keepsake for your guests as well.
If you wanted towels that say Ft Lauderdale, i would look at CVS, Walgreens once you get there. They tend to have touristy stuff like that. If you just wanted really nice beach towels, I would think you could find a place online and get them ahead of time.
Sunscreen I was thinking small travel bottles, again Walgreens/CVS/Walmart once you get there.
Hats, again if you wanted them to say Ft Lauderdale, look at stores there.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

A) You can probably find cheap, thin, linen cloth totes at any craft stores: Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, etc.
B) Your ideas sound cute, but I would add some sunglasses, sunscreen, and other staples of welcome bags: Some snacks, aspirin, candy, etc.
C) Any of the little things you can probably get at any Dollar Store. It doesn’t seem like they would take too much time and effort to put together. I think it would just be matter of whether you wanted completed bags upon landing or some you still have to put together.

@futuremrskhbd — we’re getting married in Miami and just ordered customized sunglasses with our names on them. Also planning to do water, travel sunscreen, etc in case ppl want to go to the beach/pool. Curious to see other suggestions too!!

frywedding2015: Thank you so much!!!! I never thought of hats and stuff like that. I was wanting towels, but wasn’t sure how to fit them in our luggage. I’ll definitely check out the drugstores. That was really helpful! Fiance actually wanted to give out small bottles with a message in them and our wedding date and info and let them get some sand. We thought that would be a special little memory thing for everyone!

Thank you ladies so much!!! A lot of the people we are inviting are an older group, so that was one of the reasons I was on the fence about sunglasses. That may be something to give to the younger group, though. I do have a couple of teens/young adults, so I may add those in their bags. I dont mind putting some things in, upon arrival.
Silly Question: I know airlines are kind of picky about what you bring. One of the things I was thinking about was small, personalized bottles of sunscreen (the kind on keychains)….I could fly with those, right?? 😛

i would suggest packing the sunscreens in your checked baggage, rather than your carry on. in a plastic ziploc bag of course. check with your airline to make sure, though!

I am doing welcome bags! I wanted canvas too made out of eco friendly materials and recyclable/reusable. For that reason too, we didn’t want to plaster our names all over it because we want people to actually use them so instead we put our wedding ’emblem’ on them. It’s actually the bird tattoo I have on my ankle but we’ve been using them throughout like on the back of envelope invites, will be on some napkins, etc. We’re planning to fill them with candy goodies and some other fun stuff! I know I would love to have a bag if I were guest so I was so happy to see someone else on here was doing them!

BohemianButterfly: Oh, I love it!!! I want people to reuse them, as well, so I may just paint stripes on them and customize a few of the things inside. I’m probably giving out the personalized silk fans at the ceremony and then the little bottles for the sand will have the date and our names on it. I think that’s why I’ll probably just get a towel that says Ft. Lauderdale on it, so it’s not too cheesy to reuse. I’m glad you mentioned that, because I hadn’t thought about people probably not wanting to use things with our names plastered all over!!!!
You ladies are awesome!!! I’ll check with the airline ahead of time about the sunscreen. 🙂
