My SO has two phone interviews with companies in North Carolina this week, if they go well, they will fly him in for 2nd interviews. One is in Charlotte and the other Raleigh. I know NOTHING about the south…and be honest I am nervous about possibly moving there. Can you NC bees tell how it is to live in either in of these cities? My biggest issue is safety, I am from the midwest…things are pretty vanilla around here. I have heard that the crime is out of control in Charlotte…is this true?
Anywho, share your thoughts please!

@FutureMrsJefferson: Hello! I am also from the midwest and have moved to North Carolina (Wilmington). My husband grew up in Raleigh and I think he would say it is pretty safe. If you can afford it, live in Cary because it’s really nice and they have everything you could want or need. I also would be ok walking around Cary at night. And if you live in the Raleigh area, the beach is only a couple hours drive away. I’m not sure about the crime in Charlotte. I always thought of it as the liberal haven of North Carolina. So if you’re liberal and are worried about how conservative it is down here, go with Charlotte. The weather is amazing here compared to the midwest, so there’s that. Today it was 73 degrees (in Wilmington). The people are nice, their southern accents are pretty charming. That’s all I really know.

I currently live about 10 minutes outside of Charlotte. I grew up in Western NY, but have lived here for the past 14 years. I don’t think I’d say the crime is out of contriol here. Sure, there are parts of the city that are less than desirable. But, there are plenty of nice areas to live. Charlotte is like a big melting pot of transplants. I know some people who were born & raised here, but many are newer to the area, just like me. I would recommend visiting both cities before making a final decision. And, keep in mind that the Charlotte city limit does encompass almost the entire county, so many people who work in Charlotte live in the neighboring counties where it’s more suburban and schools are better. I really do like it here. It’s a 3 hr ride to the ocean & a 2 hour ride to the mountains.

I grew up in the RTP area. Cary is incredibly safe and family friendly. It borders on boring, but I guess it’s better for adults than teenagers. Raleigh is also a good place to live – being a city of course there are some sketchy parts, but it’s not a hotbed of crime or anything. Please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about the Cary/Raleigh area – I don’t like to put a bunch of personal background info on posts, but I’m happy to share my knowledge!

@FutureMrsJefferson: I have lived in NC my whole life. I prefer Raleigh to Charlotte but that’s just my opinion. Because they are major cities they both have not so great areas but overall they are both very nice places to live. NC is great because you have a great variety of vacation spots 🙂 Wilmington is my favorite. I went to school there and I lived there for 5 years 🙂 def go if you get a chance!

Bumping. I’ve lived in NC for 20 years now. I lived one hour outside of Charlotte for 18 years and I now live in Raleigh. I didn’t think I would like Raleigh but I love it. It seems like everything is within 20 minutes driving and there are a lot of amenities and activities. I don’t live in the best area but I’m fine jogging with my dog. We’re looking into buying in north Raleigh in a few months. I think Raleigh has a small town feel to it.
Charlotte is more city. I don’t like it as much because everything seems so spread out. My in laws live in south Charlotte near Ballentyne. That’s a nice area but it’s so far from Uptown. I don’t hate it and it is a nice place to live.

Hi! I don’t know if you are still looking into North Carolina. I live in Charlotte and have been here for 15 years now. I also went to college in Raleigh. Both are great places to live. Both consistently rate in the top of the country in terms of growth because it is such a desirable place to move to. I do prefer Charlotte though. Charlotte feels more urban and sophisticated to me. It is a very professional-oriented city and forward-thinking. I work downtown and live in the city about twenty minutes south of downtown. I often work late and do not feel unsafe here at all. Sure, if it is really late I will have a security guard walk me to my car but that is just precaution. My house is actually not far from a sketchy area but I have never worried about walking around there. I also have a beautiful greenway about a half mile away that I run on and often see deer in our yard. I love being in a place that is so close to the urban center but still feels quiet and natural. Good luck to you and your fiancé with job hunting!

FutureMrsJefferson: i have lived in charlotte for 20 years (besides 5 years i was away at college) and i am from north carolina originally (asheville). charlotte is very safe as long as you choose the right part of town, or go outside of town. places like ballantyne, pineville, matthews, mint hill, concord, lake normal, huntersville, or tega cay are areas surrounding the city that are still like 15-30 min to uptown but very safe and beautiful!!!
