Calling All WNY/CNY/NNY Brides!

posted 6 months ago in New York - Upstate NY

For all of us NYS brides who are not in the NY Metro area, I thought it would be great to compare where each of us is hosting our nuptials. One would never guess it based on the majority of wedding blogs out there, but there are brides in existence north of the city.  I live in WNY currently but am a Thousand Islands region native so our wedding will take place over two days next summer on the St. Lawrence River right in the midst of the islands.

Congratulations!  It is beautiful in the Thousand Islands during the summer.  We are getting married next summer in downtown Rochester.

Congrats! That area is so beautiful in the summer (the FI is from the region). I'm getting married in Rochester next summer. Reception in Churchville. Can't wait!

I'm getting married in Little Falls, NY - Outskirts of the Adirondak park, Mohawk Valley.  We are having an October wedding - hoping the foliage will be intense.  I'm a CNY Native, Cortland area.  We searched from the Finger Lakes to the Thousand Islands before settleing on our venue.  Hope it all comes together.

Hi all! I live in Chicago, but I am getting married in August at home in the Albany area (Waterford and Troy, NY specifically).

Not and upstate bride, but I went to college in Rochester, so I wanted to say hi! :)

Please tell me someone on this board is having a Dinosaur BBQ Rehearsal Dinner or something!?!

Hey Everyone!

I'm originally from Utica, Mr. Radish is from Potsdam.  We both used to live in Buffalo (which is where we met) and we got married in Syracuse... so we kind of have all of our Upstate bases covered.

We live in Chicago now.

Any other Utica or Syracuse girls here?

I live in New York City but am getting married in July in Grafton, NY (about 20 minutes east of Troy, NY). We're having a laid-back BBQ with swimming, horsehoes, and basketball.

Would love to know what vendors people are using!

Hi ladies!

I'm excited about this board!  I currently live in Boston, but moving to Baltimore MD soon... but grew up and went to college in CNY, and will be getting married in Skaneateles, a little town in the Fingerlakes near Syracuse.  Yay CNY!

Hey Shailer,

Skaneateles is beautiful!  What venue will you be using?

posted by radish 156 posts 6 months ago

Hi Radish-

Thanks for the message!  Skaneateles is where I grew up (and my parents, too!), and we'll be getting married at a B&B with a carriage barn called Frog Pond B&B.  So excited!  Where did you get married?

posted by Shailer 12 posts 6 months ago

I've never heard of that, but I did look at a few places in Skaneateles like the Sherwood Inn.  It's so pretty out there.

I got married in Syracuse and had our reception at the Wellington House in Fayetteville.

Hi Toucan!

For our rehearsal dinner we're doing Dino BBQ. I couldn't resist. Mmmm :) I'm  going to have to drink a TON of water though, because it's soooo salty.

MMMM, BBQ....

Sorry, haven't eaten dinner yet.   ..::salivates::..

We live in Ithaca and are getting married at the Fontainebleau Inn in Alpine, which is SW on Route 13 between Ithaca and Watkins Glen. It's close to both Seneca and Cayuga Lakes but is actually on CayuTa Lake - I have to tell people every time that I do mean to say "T" instead of "G!"

As for vendors, the wedding is being catered by Word of Mouth (two very very cool women in Trumansburg, who are using my grandpa's chocolate beet cake recipe to make our cupcakes/cake), and the "flower-lady" is Audrey Norberg from Plenty of Posies - she has a stand at the Ithaca Market and grows most of the flowers on her farm. Our photographer is Laura Kozlowski, who recently moved to Ithaca from Boston (as did we), and Rabbi David Regenspan is officiating. We found online an article he wrote about why he performs interfaith weddings and under what circumstances, and I felt like it described us really well. He's a little quirky and has a son who's an Oberlin alum, just like me, so I thought that was a good sign.  My dress is being made by Chrissy Wai-Ching in Seattle, which is about as un-local as I could get, but I just couldn't resist...

Right now we're looking for a mellow rehearsal dinner space in the area (preferably near Alpine, since a lot of the guests will be staying closer to there than to Ithaca) that's pretty inexpensive. Most of our guests will actually be at the RD because most of them are from out of town.

Oh my gd, sorry, foaming at the mouth.

GorgesViola -

Mr. Radish was in his friend's wedding at the Fountainbleau Inn a couple of years ago.  It was lovely!  It's so beautiful there and from what I recall, everything went very smoothly.

They had their RD at the Watkins Glen State Park at one of the pavilions. A lot of the OOT guests were staying at some lodge/hotel place that was right near there so it worked very well.

I am glad to have gotten this thread started! Currently, I live in Canandaigua right near the lake and I love the Finger Lakes! My future husband and I met at a Seneca Lake wine tour bachelor/ette party when he was Best Man and I the Maid of Honor when my two best friends from college got married. The groom was his brother and a dear friend of mine, so when we get married two very important people in my life will go from feeling like family to being family.

Ok, at any rate...I went to college/grad school in WNY and work in Rochester. As a TI region native I've spent a lot of time in/around the Syracuse area (still hopelessly devoted to Cuse basketball!) and am a rabid Dino BBQ fan...not to mention a good Abbott's cone! The point of all this rambling....I am so familiar with many of the areas/venues everyone has mentioned and I love hearing about what other brides are planning.

We are tentatively slated for a two day wedding in 2009. We are looking at a small ceremony on Friday evening for about 30 guests @ Boldt Castle on Heart Island with dinner to follow. Saturday we will have an informal brunch and boat cruise of the TI followed by a cocktail/BBQ reception for about 150 somewhere in Alexandria Bay, possibly Clayton.

Mrs. Radish, yay! I'm so glad you've been to a wedding at the Fb. It was the only venue we visited in person but just felt like the right place. I like that it's family-run but they do a LOT of weddings, so it feels personal but has the routine down.

I would love to do something at a park but am worried about the weather/cold factor, since it's in late October. I wonder if those pavilions are heated at all... that would be so awesome.

Cyd, I love your story!!!

I am from Syracuse. Presently, kind of a lurker. Not officially engaged yet :)

Hi everyone! I'm in Buffalo, NY and we're getting married at a downtown hotel, it's the one thing I really wanted, especially since it's a winter wedding. You really can't take advantage of all the gorgeous mansions around here in the snow :)
