I know you are going to hate hearing this, but the best place (we have found) to register for things like this is WalMart. We didn't get our tent there-I think we bought that at REI, but we registered for lots of camping equipment at WalMart (we were not going to register there, but ended up doing so bc of this reason) tarps, white gas stove, assorted gear, screen house, dining fly, propane refill tanks, lanterns, etc.
You can set up a wedding registry at Amazon.com too! You can get almost everything on Amazon, including camping/outdoor gear. So register at Amazon for your camping gear and throw in some of the usual housewares you may need, or even some random things you and your FI just have the desire to own should you already have your house in order.
REI is an outdoors/camping store. (Its Wikipedia page says it has stores in 27 states.) My brother and SIL registered at REI and had a good experience. They got tents, jackets, boots, camping cookware and other stuff that they've put to very good use on all of their trips.
We registered for this stuff at Target. We aren't big campers so not sure on the quality but we figured its something that we wanted and should have. Good luck!
We registered at REI a few weeks ago - we're members there too so it's sort of our go-to place. If you're looking for things that basic, maybe just at Target or something and you'd be covered, but if you have an REI in your area, I really recommend it. The stuff we registered for was a bunch of stuff that we haven't gotten around to purchasing for ourselves yet, or something upgraded from the junky cheap gear we bought as students (like backpacking cooksets etc).
I 2nd that, JDH - If you have a registry at Target, I love their on-line selection of outdoor things. They have quite a bit and guests can easily order on-line and have it shipped to you. I'm not positive that they have "the best" stuff, but it's affordable and easy for your guests since you can register for EVERYTHING there.
REI...
We registered there, we're members as well. REI has an amazing return policy. They stand behind their merchandise for LIFE. AND...if you become a member, you get a 10% dividend on all of your full price purchases.
Even for basic stuff, I would recommend REI. My experiences buying gear from non-gear specialists is that you end up with a product that is heavy and doesn't stand the test of time.
REI is out as the closest one is about 5 hours away and I hadn't even heard of it until now. But these other ideas are good.
Whenever I've bought a gift on a registry I just bought it online and had it shipped so I don't think it matters that it's 5 hours away from you. Most people will just buy online anyway.
Yeah, you could still do REI if you think a lot of guests feel comfortable with online shopping, but if you know a fair number of your guest list doesn't do online shopping, you at least need a second registry at a place where they can shop in the actual store. We registered at Target because at least 50% of our guest list would never shop online and there's no REI in our area. We registered for several basic camping materials through them. I bought the "important" camping gear from REI for FI's groom's gift.
We registered at REI. I found that using their registry is kind of a pain, but outdoors equipment is so appropriate for us that it made sense... and at least in Washington and California, REI is everywhere.
I agree with Grnmel regarding gear from other non-outdoor specialist stores. You want your outdoor experience to be as pleasant as possible, and that means good cookware, comfortable thermarests, good sleeping bags and at minimum a nice 3 season tent.
We registered for titanium cookware (so light), a great stove (my old whisperlite is pretty hammered now) and put as much consideration into these decision as we did into All-Clad and knives. Then again, we are huge gear-geeks, and before I fell for fiance, I always said that the L word (love) was best reserved for good gear!

Where would you do this at? We are looking at mostly camping gear (a tent, tarp, grill, lantern ect) Gander mountain doesn't have a gift registry or wish list, and cabela's is the same.
