I kept my parents address when I changed my name, since we hadn't found our house yet. Then when we moved, I just got a change of address card, since i had also renewed my license when I changed my name. Is that a possibility? I don't think I would start the process without finishing it, since they are legal documents...
The rules can vary from state to state, but for the most part the DMV will usually want you to change your name at the Social Security office before you change your name on your license. I personally think it's better and easier to get both of them done around the same time, and then change your passport when you get a chance. That way, you don't have conflicting identification if you get a new job when you move.
I suggest changing your name at the Social Security office and then doing your driver's license once your new SS card comes, even if you're using your old address. It's usually pretty easy to change your address on your license (in CO you just update with the DMV online and write the new address on the back of your license; in AZ you update online, pay a small fee, and they will mail you a new license).
Changing your name is a big process (I'm still not technically finished and we've been married since 2009) and will be easier if you start before you move. Especially if you're going to a new state - you'd end up doing everything twice, once in your maiden name and then changing to married.
Thanks Ladies! Name changing is just such a confusing process!
I went ahead and applied to change my name with the SS office today- I was already by the office to turn in our marriage license, so I just went ahead and finished it.
I'm still going to call the BMV to make sure what their policy is, but I was told at SS that I wouldn't have my new name in the system until tomorrow anyway. Since I work the rest of the week, I would have had to wait a week to go in anyway.
If I have the option to keep my parents address on my license, I would be fine doing that for now- I just don't want to have to pay to get a new license multiple times!
@tinylittlebird: ask them about the change of address card, here it is free and you just do it online, and they mail you the paper card. You just have to keep it with your real license in case you get pulled over, cuz you can get a ticket for not having it. In MD, anyway
My last name is alrady changed with the SSA, but I have still yet to change my DL.
I changed my name on my DL before the social sercurity and had no trouble doing either. Though most states you really should changing your address on your DL everytime you move. I know in the state I live in, if you get caught with a DL with the wrong address its a pretty hefty fine
@PrncssDva: I'm like this too. I haven't gone to the DMV yet but I'm probably going Friday to get it changed. The only reason I'm getting up the energy to do this is because we're moving states and I want to make sure that my names match and I have an easier form of ID for everything (bank card, signing a new lease, etc).
@Sassygrn: See, *technically* speaking, the address on my license is my permanent address. It's my parent's house, I just haven't physically lived in it for... oh.... 6 years?
But, when you move around about every year or two (2 dorm rooms, 5 different apartments if you count the temporary subleases) it just doesn't make sense to change it on your license after every move.
So, I've kept that as my "permanent" address, and nobody ever really questioned it.
I just wasn't sure if I was allowed to continue doing this, since my parents will no longer be claiming me as a dependent on taxes.
@tinylittlebird: I actually should have added earlier that I'm keeping my mom's address on my license. I'd also like to know if this is allowed or not because I never thought twice about it. I haven't lived there since 2006 but we've lived in a dorm, two different apartments, and are going to live in a rental home when we move since the location probably isn't permanent.
I got my name changed at the SS since we were moving out of state the next month. You probably won't be able to change your name on any of your accounts without having a new drivers license. I kept my old address on my driver's license before because it really isn't worth paying the fee just to change the address but if you are considering moving that might be worth waiting a little while for but not forever.

I'm not really sure what to do. I want to go to Social Security and get started on changing my name, but I really don't know what to do about my address on my driver's license!
Both of us currently have our parent's addresses on our licenses- we've been in college for years, moving from apartment to apartment, so it just made more sense to keep our "permanent" addresses on our licenses.
So, now I want to change my name, and we've technically lived in this apartment for 2 years, but we're moving at the end of the month, and as of right now, we don't know where that will be.
Also, he's looking for jobs out of state, so if he gets an offer, we'll be relocating, and I'll need to get a new license then, anyway....
So, I'm just wondering if I can apply to change my name, but wait a month or two to change it on my license? Or should I just wait to change my name legally until after we've moved?
