@HappyBride827:  Yeah, I don’t think babies actually have developed obvious external sex organs this early.  And even if something IS developing, it’s really easy early on for an enlarged clitoris to look like a teeny penis.  But I agree that what you’re looking at is likely the umbilical cord.

You can’t tell for certain until 17-20 weeks. Even then I would be sceptical. I was told to expect a boy early on but found at it was (DEFINITELY) a girl at a 32 weeks scan.

you can tell that early (or at least, make a better than random guess) if you have the right kind of picture. I don’t know the details though. All I know is that boys and girls both have external, protruding genetalia at that point in development and so the presence vs. absence isn’t what suggests one gender or the other, it’s the angle of it. Google ‘the nub theory’.

Ehh…the ultrasound tech had a hunch I was having a boy at 14 weeks (she even did something with color showing the blood flow to make sure it wasn’t the umbilical cord.  So it’s possible, but I wouldn’t start shopping yet.

You wouldn’t be able to tell at the angle this image was taken.

I was able to tell we were having a boy at 14.5 weeks.  But, it was the money shot where he looked like he was sitting on the camera.  We did go back and confirm.  Twice.

@HappyBride827:

it is possible, but not always accurate. My coworker had a hunch she was having a girl at 14 weeks, but she’s been scanning herself weekly to make sure. the beauty of 24/7 access to an ultrasound machine LOL

Yes it’s possible to know that early. I knew at 14 weeks I was having a boy, but he was laying on his back with arms and legs spread wide apart and we could clearly see his manhood, no mistake there.
