Hello all –
For my wedding, I plan on having my mom and grandmother’s wedding dress remade because I don’t like the top. I don’t plan on buying a seperate dress. However, I’m not 100% of the style I want to remake the generational dress into, and I certainly don’t want to get it remade and then have it not be something that looks fantastic on me.
Would you recommend I make an appointment to try on the different styles of dresses, even though I have no intention (and no room in the budget) of buying a new dress?
I’m worried that by going and looking, I will find and fall in love with a new dress. I feel guilty about wanting to go take someone’s time who probably works on commission, knowing they will be losing money while working with me. But I’m also worried that, although the dress will have plenty of sentimental value, it won’t be spectacular.

There are many bridal shops who also have seamstresses that re-make, repair or resize dresses on a regular basis. If you haven’t found a seamstress yet you could always take it to one of them and have them let you know what kinds of tops it will be possible to re-make your dress in to, try on those kind at that shop and choose, I think that seems perfectly fair.
I agree about wasting time with someone who is on comission and needs to sell you a dress to feed thier children. I am a pretty big believer in karma and would hate to have anything negitive around my dress. thats just my thought though.

I would go someplace like davids bridal and tell them youre just beginning to look for dresses and right now you just want to see what they look like on you. There are lots of styles and silhouettes available that you can try there, and maybe if you need a petticoat or something you can go through threm if you really feel that bad about it. I dont think you should, though.

I think you would be better off finding a good seamstress who you could take the dress to and talk about how it could be made over to suit you. 🙂
