I would say as long as it’s long and formal-looking, you can wear it!  I love the color BTW!

@dancingfox:  the color is a bit loud, but I think it will work.

Absolutley! Dress it up with nice shoes and some jewelry and you will be fine!

I think you can–but I agree with PPs that the color–while beautiful–is a bit loud. You’ll stand out–but probably not in the way that you want to.

Does it come in another color?

The colour is a bit loud, but the style is fine.  If it was Black Tie Preferred, I would say go ahead, but Black Tie Requested, basically means wear a tuxedo unless you can’t afford one. I would do a dress like that in a slightly more sedate colour.  A statement necklace would not be out of place either.

I think it’s great! and I love the color. only thing I would check is to make sure it’s not the same color as the bridesmaids/wedding colors. Woudn’t want people mistaking me as a bridesmaid (not that it really matters, just a personal preference there)

I think it is a perfect dress to wear to a formal event. It will be in August which is the middle of summer. It’s perfect if people are younger and more fashion forward. I think only an older, more conservative person would think you need it in a darker color.

@Woodstock:  that’s funny because my bridesmaids’ dresses are that EXACT color and the dresses are similar too!

@Duncan:  true, but have you seen the colors they have worn to recent award ceremonies and large events in NYC? Bright yellow, blues, etc

@gelaine22:  Those events are “Creative Black Tie” most of the time.  Plus, as the site I posted above mentions, fashions that look good on a celebrity are only helpful to you, if the celebrity will also be the one wearing it for you.  Though, I am sure OP has selected a dress well suited to her figure.  Just a funny line I wanted to share.

I think it’s great, and will be even better with some ultra fancy jewelery!
