I’m unemployed and it sucks. I’ve been trying since the end of December to find a job – any job – but haven’t had any luck. (Even McDonalds and Tim Hortons didn’t call me back!) So this pretty much means I have no money. I have enough in savings to pay my bills and all that, and Fiance works fulltime so it’s not like we’re completely broke. But I am just so sick of not having a job!! I really tried so hard, I applied to 75+ places, but I live in a town with over 20,000 FT students and it is extremely hard to find a job there. The upside is we’re moving towns in just over a month now… And the new town is much easier for jobs, it’s not a college town. But that’s still a month away.
What I want to whine about is money. I haven’t bought myself anything fun in a very long time. Haven’t bought clothes since last June (when I was still working), haven’t bought any little fun things like new makeup or shoes, or even magazines. Waste of money, but I used to love buying all my favourite magazines every month. I splurged the other day and bought myself an $8 scented candle for the bedroom and then felt guilty for spending the money. I feel so bad for complaining about it. I have enough money to live, pay rent and bills, and buy groceries (FI and I take turns buying food), but no “fun money”. If I really wanted to I could ask my Fiance for some money to buy things but I’d rather he save it for something useful or practical. And I would hate asking him anyways.
Basically.. I just needed to have a minute to whine. I hate that I’m coming across as sounding spoiled… I’m really not like that. It’s just that I had a great job after high school and got used to having that steady income and buying myself new clothes and treats all the time. Now that I’m out on my own and unemployed… it just sucks. I JUST WANT A FREAKING JOB!! I don’t think that’s asking too much.
On the plus side.. it’s time to start looking for one in my new town. I’m there this weekend so I’m going around everywhere and applying. I’m not picky, I just want a steady source of income. Fingers crossed!

Aw… well it sounds like you’re doing all the right things. I have a problem with people whining when they have the power to change their situation… but when someone is doing what they need to do and its just not working– whine away! Sometimes I think just venting a minute can get the bad thoughts out of your mind and let you move on in a more positive way 🙂

It sounds like youre doing all the right things, so just hang in there and something WILL come along.

@CorgiTales: Venting is such a great thing, I already feel better. I definitely get you on people who whine but don’t do anything to fix it… that bothers me too.
I’m mad because I had “interviews” at a few places (not official interviews, but like a Q&A with the managers while I dropped off my resume) and they seemed so interested. One place even said “we’ll call you this weekend to set up a proper interview” but then no calls, from any of them! At least call to say you don’t need anyone at the moment, don’t let me get my hopes up…

🙁 You’re completely allowed to whine! Wishing you luck for the future. You’ll find something in the new town. The time of year is hard, too. Most places have just laid off their holiday help within the last few months, but a lot of places hire more help for the summer, so within the next couple of months, hopefully you’ll find something!

I hear you. I had a very hard time finding my job after I got laid off. I got lucky because a friend knew of an opening at her work that fit my degree.
Lots of warm wishes heading your way!
Vent away 🙂

That’s so tough! I was unemployed for a year and not being able to buy fun stuff was the worst! Good luck with the job search!

I am in a similar boat. I have a job, but it pays crap. I haven’t been able to buy myself anything fun in a long time either. It gets super discouraging, but I just try and focus on being grateful for what I do have. Way easier said than done. LOL. My guy makes more money than I do, so he can go out to eat lunch and buy fun stuff, but I have to be super careful. The only extra money I do have goes to the wedding, which my parents are paying the majority of. It sounds like you will be in a much better situation next month once you guys move though! In the meantime, have you thought about trying to take on temp jobs with a temp agency or even baby sitting or something? I donated plasma for a while for some extra cash, but it was kinda weird, so I stopped. But I might start up again. lol.
Best of luck to you in your job search!!

@Gingersnap:Have you tried following up with these places instead of waiting for them to call you back? At my current position, I called the manager every other week for 4 months after my first interview. I wouldn’t let any company that I applied to off the hook until they officially turned me down.
I know it’s hard when you’re looking for work because it’s your #1 priority, but it’s the manager’s #1,000ths priority. Sometimes some persistence really pays off!

@CanAmBride: This is a great idea. It’s also how I’ve gotten jobs.
Good luck! It’s tough out there, but something will come through for you!

@CanAmBride: I was about to say the exact same thing! Follow-up with those places that said they would call but haven’t. Taking that initiative should impress them too!

@CanAmBride: I followed up on all my “prefered” applications (i.e all the restauarnt serving positions and retail jobs. I didn’t bother with fast food places). I got the generic “we’re not hiring right now but we’ll keep your application on file” answer for almost all of them, but a few were “we just hired someone”.

While you’re doing every thing you can to find a job, do you have anything lying around that you can sell on ebay? I make a decent amount of extra cash selling old clothes, purses, whatever that I would normally give away. Last month I made $50.
