I grew up with cats, my mom was the “cat lady” and at one point we had twelve cats. My husband on the other hand is allergic to cats. For Christmas all my five year old wanted was a cat and since we moved into a house without carpet we decided to make her year and get her a kitten.
Since the day we got the kitten, every single day for two weeks I’ve gotten a migraine. I was getting them before but a little caffeine would help and since getting the cat caffeine hasn’t been helping. At first I thought maybe I was just building up a tolerance for caffeine but it seems to be a big coincidence that the caffeine stopped working the day we got the kitten. Since I have never had allergies to cats I’ve been hugging on the cat non stop and it sleeps on my pillow with me at night, heck it’s laying on my belly trying to stop me from typing as I write this. But now I’m wondering, can you develop new allergies when you are pregnant?
my husband hasn’t had any problems with his allergies since he washes his hands every time he pets the cat and the cat sleeps on my side of the bed but I’m just wondering if its coincidence or maybe I did develop a new allergy? Anyone know the probability or likelihood of developing allergies while pregnant?
oh and I’m. 21w1d pregnant now 🙂

Are you congested too or you just get migraines? The reason I ask is because I don’t think allergies alone can cause a migraine but sinus congestion can cause a migraine. If it’s just headaches and no congestion, sneezing etc., I would guess that the migraines are pregnancy related and have nothing to do with the cat. I had really bad migraines in my second trimester.

I think it’s definitely possible. I have found the opposite though – things I was allergic to before I am not anymore. I never could drink milk without severe stomach issues, I can since I’ve gotten pregnant. I also used to be allergic to apples – they would make me super itchy, but now I can eat them without problems (good thing too because I am currently obsessed with them!)

I think you would have taken longer to show symptoms if it was the cat. Her dander wouldn’t suddenly explode in our house the moment she came home. Have you had you blood pressure and blood sugar checked lately? It could also be your sinuses. When you move your head around does it increase the pain? If so call your dr and ask what you can take for it and see if it helps, otherwise I’d consider making an appt. to make sure everything is ok. Daily migraines arent normal even for allegy sufferers. If all else fails Ad you think it is the cat you can take plenty of OTC allergy pills. Again double check with dr, but I was cleared to take Zyrtec, Claritin, or Benadryl.
