hi ladies -- i definitely plan to speak to a seamstress in person, but i have to wait until i receive the dress in a larger size (ordered online) to bring it in.

but for now... for those who know something about sewing -- is there any hope to somehow accommodate for a larger bust on this dress?

    http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=235907&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

i tried on a dress that was a size smaller than the one i need, and love it, but there is definitely not much room up top, and i'm guessing the larger size won't entirely fix that either.  i am about a 38c (although, i may be wearing the wrong size according to online calculators...) or so and may go down some more before april since i am steadily losing weight (40 pounds since october!) but probably not down to the b-cup size that it looks like the dress could hold....

if you zoom into the picture you can see that the top is sort of folds/pleats, would it be possible to add some fabric there and have it look decent? (there would be plenty of extra fabric from hemming it.

your thoughts would be appreciated as i wait for the correctly-sized dress to arrive so i can check in person!

I sew a lot and it all depends how much of a seam allowance is in the bust area. There is a possibility that you will see the previous seam lines on the pleated area and the straps when the seams are adusted. I would strongly advise you to order it to fit your bust and have the rest taken in. It is much easier to take in than let out.

unfortunately the size i have ordered now is the largest they make, so it is more of a design issue i think...  i have other thoughts (all off the rack) but i really liked this one best so far, so i would like to hope - but am working on back-ups too!

    thanks!

I wore this dress in black(or something very similar from Macy's) to my FI brothers wedding!  I have a similar bra size too.  I don't exactly know what your problem was with the dress if it was just too tight or if it was also too low.  For me, I had to have the straps taken up and that helped me feel locked and loaded.  I would also try the dress on with a few different undergarments.  I also sew, and if there isn't a lot of seam allowance there is only so much they can do.  But you could always add a lace or something pretty to the top if it is just to revealing.  Hope this helps!

oh guacamole, thanks for giving me a bit of hope ;-) i'm sure the larger size will have a bit more allowance so i'll get a better sense of how much more room i need (ha) but with the size i tried on, i just didn't quite fit in the cups -- the bottom pleat sort of cut into the bottom 1/3 of the bust.  so we'll see - back to trolling other dress sites online.  i bet this dress is gorgeous in black!

My concern would be that your chest wouldn't fit into the little cup cutouts in the dress.  I'm large chested and mine definitely wouldn't fit!

definately depends on how much the cup allowance is in the larger size. i had to order my dress to fit my boobies as well - and the bottom of the dress pretty much has to be trimmed in half to fit the body.

it really does depend on the actual inside construction of the dress - a talented seamstress can work wonders though! :) good luck!!!

I read the reviews  of the dress on the link you provided.

Almost all of them refer to the dress being very long, even for tall girls with heels.

Perhaps that could be a source of extra fabric for a talented seamstress to alter the bodice of the dress to fit.

just an update, ladies:  i JUST (like 2 minutes ago, heehee) received the larger size of the dress and of course immediately tried it on.  the good news is that there is definitely more fabric up top and it mostly covers me up with some good lifting & advance arranging :-)  but it would be even better if there was some more fabric up there, so i'll be taking it to the seamstress later in the week once we dig out from the storm!

WOOHOO!  just got back from the seamstress (hey, i was just sitting at home doing nothing, might as well knock that off the to-do list...) and she thought it would be totally doable!  she suggested adding some fabric at the side seam to give some more room up top and a few changes to the straps which i didn't quite follow the technical sewing talk for, but between that and losing more weight before the wedding on this medical diet i'm on (according to my doctor, i am pretty certainly going to lose at least 15 pounds by then) i think this is the dress!  i have a first fitting scheduled for march.  YAY!  thanks for the encouragement to even try to do this!
