Can you get married in a state other than the one you live in?

Yes, people do it all the time. Look at the number of folks who travel to Vegas which is the wedding capital of the country. Or who choose Hawaii for a tropical wedding. You would need to get a marriage license in the county of the state you plan to marry in, otherwise it will not be legally valid. Call the courthouse in that county to find out if there are residency restrictions or not.

@HotSauce: We are from Virginia and we got married in Georgia. For Georgia you will need to obtain a marriage license from the county that you wish to get married in. We had to actually get our marriage license in person at the Putnamy County courthouse. All we needed to bring with us was our drivers licenses! But the answer is yes, you can do it and people do it all the time!

We are having our wedding in another state 15 minutes from our house (we live close to the state line).  We were going to be married in the other state but chose to marry in our own for legal purposes early.  It also makes it really easy to keep the paperwork close at hand.  I didn’t want to have to go through the hassle of figuring out how to get copies of the paperwork from their capitol four hours away, when I could go ten minutes downtown and get it there.

We’re from DC and got married in Indiana. We just got the license from the county courthouse. Just research all of their requirements ahead of time. There may be a waiting period (i.e. between getting the license and having the ceremony) or blood tests. Also, they tend to charge a lot more for out of state couples!

We’re from Michigan, live in Texas and we’re getting married in Louisiana.  Just make sure you don’t need to be in the state a certain amount of days to apply for a marriage license.  Most of the rules are posted online about each state.

We live in TX and just got married in IN!  We had to apply in person at the county clerk’s office in the county in IN where we were getting married.  And they charge over 3 times as much for out of state couples than in state couples.  But it is totally doable!

Just google the requirements for the county you will be getting married in and it will outline everything you need to do!
