@morgobride:  my kids have a first name, a middle name, and two last names.  My last name and DH's last name which are hyphenated.  We didn't have to hyphenate the names; we just chose to.  So, our DD is:

    J**** E******** Sm***-St*******

I have two middle names and I'm not married.  My second middle name is my mother's maiden name (which she kept).  I've always loved having each parent's name as a part of my name.  I always loved having two middle names.

I have my paternal grandmother's entire name:

    Her mother's name_her mother's maiden name_her father's surname_her husband's surname.

So that means she was able to have two middle names even when she married in 1931.

The only trouble with it has been that my two middle names have the initials DR, so I often get mailings to Dr. mylastname. But I'm in med school now, so soon that'll be just dandy!

I'm planning keeping my names--I just don't get changing, and neither does my FH. But, if we have a daughter, I'm not sure what we'll do!

I too was considering making my last name a second middle name. Like you, it's driven me crazy most of my life as it's a pretty ethnic name and hard to pronounce, but the idea of losing it makes me sad. I feel like I can no longer identify with that ethnicity which is a big part of who I am. It's always been a conversation starter for it's difficulty and originality and I will actually miss that. :( However, if I made my last name a second middle name it would be a pretty long name. I dunno, I think I'm just going to suck it up and drop it. :( ::sad::
