Probably depends on the area you're in...but there are a whole heck of a lot of cheap chinese restaurants, delis, and stores selling pizza and sandwiches. And there are probably areas where you can get them at odd hours.
I recently moved out of the city, but when I was there we lived in Queens (outer borough) and I think most of the restaurants were open unti at least midnight...diners, pizza, chinese, Peruvian, and Thai were just some.
It's pretty cool ;-)
Yes and that is one reason that makes living here tolerable LOL. Like the PP said, you probably have to go out specific areas. There are tons of 24 hour diners. Taxi drivers can give you the best info as to where to go. Through the years I can't count the number of times I've hit up Gray Papayas or that hole in the wall crepe spot in the lower east side. Ummm I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
I live on Long Island and yeah, if you go to a diner you could have turkey and stuffing for breakfast or waffles and eggs at midnight if you want to lol.
@marriedtoagreatman: Yes, generally. I've lived in Manhattan for four years, and I have found this to be the case. Sushi, amazing Artichoke pizza, fancy desserts, Indian, I'd presume Chinese though I've never ordered it.
I've lived here for 6 years and I think the only food I've ever eaten at 4am was pizza, so I'm not 100% sure what is available at that time of morning. I will say though that all types of food is readily available at any time of day and it's normal to eat dinner super late, like a 10:00pm reservation would not be strange. So it's def different in that regard. When I go and visit friends in other cities I start to sweat a little because I get what I call 'sushiphobia' when I realize I cannot get amazing sushi at any given moment.

I started another thread in the lounge about what its like to live in new york city and someone said that she can eat chinese at 4 am! I love chinese, wish that was me! I guess i should have posted that thread here but i just realized that if you want to visit it its called "NYC brides or anyone that wants to read this". So tell me what kinds of foods can you get any time of night?
