Can you still chart if you work the night shift?

Equine_Breeder:  I work nights and chart. My temp is pretty much never taken at the same time. I work 7p-7a, but my time I go to sleep on work days is anywhere from 8:30 am to 12 pm. I do usually get up at a consistent time those days, but sometimes the last couple of hours I am tossing and turning and not really sleeping. Then on my off days, sometimes I will sleep at night, sometimes I will sleep in the day, sometimes I take multiple naps instead of one lone stretch of sleep, or sometimes my planned nap turns into a long stretch.

FF suggests taking at the same time every day and after at least 3 hours of sleep. For me, the same time every day is just not going to happen. I focus on trying to get my temp after a long stretch of sleep. But because I know I am a light sleeper, if I get woken up, I will go ahead and temp if it has been at least 3 hours. Then if I am able to go back to sleep, I temp when I really get up.

One thing I do, and I’m not even sure it matters, is I sleep with the thermometer under my pillow. I do this because my room tends to be colder at night than during the day and I notice a few tenths of a degree difference when taking my temp with a cold thermometer vs one that is already slightly warm from the pillow. Since my temp is sometimes at night and sometimes during the day, I didn’t want the room temp to influence mine anymore than it already does.

I’ve been consistently temping for 3 full cycles, plus this one, so 3 1/2 and I’ve always had a clear biphasic pattern even with my erratic temperature taking.

Equine_Breeder:  Yes CD 5 is fine to start!! That’s when I started this cycle bc my temps during AF are more erratic. My temps before and after O are definitely all over the place but they stay pretty much above and below FF’s cover line.

There is my chart if you want to add me or see what night shift and crazy sleeping does to your chart 🙂

Equine_Breeder:  I work a rotation schedule flipping from nights to days and back in less than a week.  I temp whenever I get up.  On days/days off I temp at 5 in the morning (I set an alarm for days off, I temp and then go back to sleep.)  On nights I temp whenever I wake up.  My night shift temps are slightly higher than my regular time temps, but not so much higher that I can’t see the pattern.

This is only my second month charting, and most of last month I was off on vacation. 🙂  What I did was I put in a custom ‘night shift’ in the specific section.  That way its easy to identify which temperatures were taken on a night shift (it shows below where all the other random symptoms show up.)

Equine_Breeder:  I don’t know how to add people from the app unless they’ve already sent me a request. You can post your chart link and I can send you a request. Or you can click my link above and click the add to friends button at the top. It may ask you to sign in.

And as far as checking CM…are you checking internally or only on TP? I wasn’t really finding much of anything when I only checked on TP. And (this may be TMI) when using just one finger internally, I got nothing. Using two fingers, I was able to grab enough to really tell what kind it was. You may not have all kinds of CM. Mine pretty much never dries up or gets sticky like it is “supposed” to. For the most part, it’s creamy or EWCM all month with an occasional wet day. As long as you can tell what EWCM is then you should be good!

i didn’t really track CM, except for one or two days where I was sure it was different. It will work for you even if you just do temps…

I am a night shifter too!  Here is a link to my chart. Add me if you like.

I track my night shifts on it too but can’t figure out how to get it to show up on the public view.

MrsM914:  I think it will only show up if you have the VIP FF account.
