The name on the ticket and the passport would need to match so if both are in your maiden name, it should be alright... But I got this from the passport.gov website:
According to the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, "all citizens need to travel in their current, legal names."
You are encouraged to request a passport name change. If it has been less than a year, there is no fee. If more than a year has passed since your passport was issued, you need to apply for a renewal.
The passport renewal application is form DS-82. You submit the completed form along with your current passport, two photos and proof of the legal name change to the address on the application.
I had my married name on my airline tickets, but my passport and driver's license had my maiden name. So I brought a copy of my wedding certificate, and that worked. Check with the airline to be sure. Good luck!
I'm traveling under my maiden name for our honeymoon, even though I've changed everything else, because we booked the tickets under my maiden name and I didn't know if I'd have my new passport in time. But, I will be applying for my new passport the day after we get back.
I highly recommend that you buy plane tickets in your maiden name and travel for your honeymoon using that name. When you get back, pick a few months when you're not travelling and change one piece of ID (driver's license) to your married name and leave one (passport) in your maiden name. Then change everything over. Don't change your passport when you're certain everything is updated.
I had a problem because I travel frequently and my frequent flier IDs were in my maiden name (and my agency books through those IDs). So I travel with a passport in one name, license in another, and a marriage license. I'm still waiting to make sure EVERYTHING (car rental programs, hotel programs, airline programs, bank accounts, investment accounts,credit cards, etc) are changed over before changing the passport.
Since the only thing the security checkpoint sees is your passport and ticket (just don't show your driver's license since your passport counts as an ID) it should be fine, if not "Technically" legal. If all you care about is getting through the line, it doesn't matter.
my passport doesnt expire for another 8 years, so when i wnt to the post office to get a new one, the clerk told me that as long as i travel with my marriage cert. that i do not need to pay for another passport. yay!
@alishadhs4: That's good to know!
Mine doesn't expire for 5 more years and I don't feel like paying over $100 to have it renewed. If we do plan to go away I might get it changed, but otherwise I will wait as long as possible.
I travelled internationally for my honeymoon under my maiden name and was fine. When my passport comes up for renewal, I will be happy to change my name.
i missed the one year "Free renewal" period by about 5 days, because we were on our honeymoon :(

Does anyone know if you can travel on your passport that is still in your maiden name so long as you book your ticket under that name? Or if your name is already changed, is that somehow illegal/you won't be able to do it?
Yes, it's been over a year since my wedding and I've changed everything except my passport! Please let me know if you have any insight into this issue. Thanks!
