No, FAM takes a few months to get charted correctly. And it usually takes about 3 months off BC to get a good chart.
You might not even ovulate during the mornth but I think it would be hard to tell. I probably wouldn't risk it and would just use condoms for a month (they make pretty thin ones that you can't really feel much now).
@Belle2Be: That's what I thought... :(
@MissAsB: Those were the kind we used before and I would be okay with it but DH is balking. Never used to complain before we got married but now that we are I guess he thinks that's not something married people do? He's like, "Why don't we use the foam?" I don't even know what he is talking about!
@daniellemybelle: He is probably talking about the spericide foam. Not sure how effective that really is, plus it can dry you out.
You probably know this, but just in case - withdrawal method is extremely unreliable, since pre-ejaculate has a high concentration of active sperm.
@MissAsB: I just did some research and I think we might try the sponge, which is both a natural barrier and spermicidal. It has a 16% failure rate but I feel like for one month, I can take that risk if its more comfortable for us than condoms.
@mightywombat: Recent scientific studies have shown that pre-ejaculate only has sperm in it if the man has recently ejaculated and hasn't urinated in between. Otherwise, the risk of pregnancy is very low. Still, I know it is not totally reliable, which is why I wanted to combine it with FAM, but it seems like that's not a possibility...
@daniellemybelle: You're correct about pre-ejaculate. What mightywombat mentioned is a myth that is largely accepted as fact, unfortunately.
Like Belle and AsB said, FAM is not something that is a good temporary quick-fix (you should never rely on it until you have at least 3 cycles of charting experience). However, I would encourage you to start temping/charting and get the feel for how that fits with your life and schedule, and then consider sticking with it rather than going back on hormonal BC. I quit BC and I've been charting for 6 cycles and I love it! It's amazing to know exactly what's going on with your body and reproductive system. I think it's so fascinating. Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and you'll be an expert on the subject! Good luck. :)
@mightywombat: No problem :) I believed this for a long time too! I still want to find an alternative form of birth control to use in conjunction with "the old pull and pray" because it is only 85% effective with typical use. I don't want to be one of the 15 in 100!
@littlemissmango: Unfortunately, I don't think its a good idea for me to quit using hormonal BC right now, because I have a functional ovarian cyst that we've been managing by supressing ovulation. If I were to begin ovulating regularly again, I could have another flare-up where it starts growing and hurting again like it was a year ago. But I definitely want to try FAM down the road when we get this dumb cyst taken care of!
@daniellemybelle: Oh man, that's no fun! :( I don't really know much about PCOS but I have heard that some women are able to manage it without BC, against the standard advice from doctors. You might want to check out this forum on the Taking Charge of Your Fertility site -- it's specifically for women who have PCOS or endometriosis and are still doing FAM. Maybe they might have some advice for you! I hope your cyst gets under control soon.
Cute pic of you and your man, btw! :)

So I usually use Nuvaring but this month there was a mix-up with my pharmacy and they never got it filled for me. Since its not like the pill where you can double up, it ended up being that I got it too late and my doctor recommended I take a month off and we use an alternative form of birth control. I was more than happy to do that because I've been feeling like the hormones in Nuvaring are producing negative side effects. However, we haven't used condoms in quite a while and neither of us are jumping at the idea to go back to them. We already use the withdrawal method so I was thinking we could just combine that with avoiding when I ovulate and we'd be fine for just the one month. However, I'm not sure that you can really predict ovulation when you just got off HBC? Has anyone done this?
