Is your wedding inside? If not, don't get a lot of (or any) chocolate. Otherwise, I'd get whatever your faves are, or candies in your colors =)
40 guests, I'd say about 20 lbs of candy... even that would be pushing it. Get more individual things to make it "less"
About 1/2 pound or 8oz a person should be enough to make it look good and have enough for everyone to have some. As far as set up, try to get an odd number of jars in varying heights for visual interest.
I bought some of my stuff at garage sales and some at places like Home Goods and TJMaxx. My only tip is to make sure you get containers you can actually get your hands in and candy out of. Good luck!
Before I started actually buying and bringing home the candy I was thinking, I need a TON! But I dont know. I have about 130 guests-so I bought 15 different kinds (perhaps that was a bit over board but oh well, the more the merrier). I bought all the candy from BJ's, and each candy bag was in the range of 3-5 pounds each. Evens out to be about 5 - 8 oz. of candy per person.
i had 110lbs of candy for 145 people. and it was almost totally gone. We had about 20 different types of candies, but several of them were chocolate. I have a list if you want to see exactly what I bought
Also consider who your guests are when considering quantity...do you have a younger or older crowd? Younger people will want more, older people will want less.
Hahahah we went to a wedding outdoors in which they had a candy bar (tootsie rolls, sour patch kids, swedish fish, skittles, runts, etc..) The candy was GONE by the end of the night! And let me say, there was NO ONE under 21 there!!! We were soooo excited by the candy. We are doing the same thing and I don't know how much to order either....I'd rather have too much that not enough.
here's a good site I found: www.candywarehouse.com
I bought about 70ish lbs for 180 people. I was shooting for about 1/3 lb for each guest. I bought 1/2 lb tin tie bags to make sure guests don't go overboard.

We have a summer wedding..what would the top types of candy be to stock? With 40 guest how much do you think I will need? I've read all the stories on adults making mad rushes on the candy and find it so silly.
