I would see if you can get ahold of ONE jar that you plan to use, and fill it up with candy like you might want. Then weigh it and times that by the number you want.
Then eat the candy.
Not sure if this will help or not... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU6Jszgu5s4
once you get the jars, think of the candy!! some bulk stores arnt bad, but depending what you want your cost could be anywhere from around $50 to $100!!
Have you searched for them in bulk (I'm sure you have). What about dollar stores or flea markets?
I found this website where they are pretty cheap:
http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/Candles/4oz-Tapered-Jar-CT.htm
Hopefully that will help!
For the jars you can ask for friends and family to donate some!
The candy will be super cheap - if you live in an area where they have the hard candies in buckets and drums (like old tyme stores) contact them directly and tell them the amount you want (so enough to fill 100 4 oz mason jars and give them a volume estimate and they will surely sell it to you in bulk for cheap.
I finally found the 4oz ball jars at ACE Hardware, which only had 3 boxes but can order me the other 5 I need to come in on Tuesday at no extra charge. Online was going to cost about twice as much.
As for candy, I watched the video futurewiddy posted and then used the dimensions of the fish bowl to estimate the volume and then from there to see how many ounces the average candy at 5lbs a bag was taking up. The result: 5lbs of most candy (but not jelly bellies for instance) gets you about 24 4oz jars, so I ordered 4 types of candy. Here's hoping it doesn't melt. Total cost for jars and candy: approx. $200.
Thanks for your help, bees!

We're thinking of giving different yellow candies in 4oz mason jars. We'll have 100 guests, and I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything similar and can give me an idea of how much this will cost. It's really hard for me to conceptualize how far 5lbs of candy will go. I'm concerned more with the cost of that much candy than the jars. However, if anyone knows of somewhere that has the jars for less than about $8-9/dozen, I'd love to know that as well!
