Honestly, I’d let him pick the song. The first dance is such a small detail of the wedding, and men don’t often get a say or really want one in a lot of other aspects of the wedding, so I would let him have this one.

I’m in the exact same boat – We’ve been going back and forth for about 2 months now with different songs and my FI is dead set on a Beatles song because it’s one of the few bands we both enjoy, while I really wanted a Coldplay song.  I’m going to concede on it since, as a previous poster said, he hasn’t really gotten his way with much of the planning up until now.  I would just say that you should still at least like the song.  Yes, it’s only a few minutes of your wedding, but it will be something that will follow the two of you forever, whenever you hear it on the radio, play it at home, etc.

@msmaddox:  Take an evening and practice dancing to the songs to see which one flows best.  We both have different taste in music as well; he’s into modern techno and I’m a country girl.  Plus, the song we both loved and agreed on first was completely inappropriate for a first dance song (No Children by The Mountain Goats.)  When we tried to dance to the 4 or 5 songs we were debating, one just completely stood out as being easier and more natural for us to dance to.  We cut down to those songs by cutting any song over 4 minutes because we think it would be uncomfortable to slow dance in front of all of our guests for more than a few minutes.

We are incorporating our favorite song in by having our guests sign the vinyl album of The Mountain Goats’ Tallahassee album as our guest book.
