My fiance and I are getting married in Nassau County, NY… but we can’t find an officiant. We have contacted 10 prospective officiants and the lowest quote we got for a short, non-religious ceremony was $600. The average quote was $1000 and the highest was $1500!
I have no problem paying an officiant for his or her time and efforts in creating a ceremony for us, but I can’t afford $600 for a simple, non-customized ceremony.
We tried to have my cousin get ordained so that he could officiate, because he and I are very close and he was psyched about potentially officiating our ceremony, but it turns out that Nassau County doesn’t allow anyone with an online ordainment to perform legal ceremonies. We’re really stuck here. We’re on a tight budget and we are panicking because we can’t afford an officiant.
We’ve cut corners in every possible way (my dress was $100, our DJ was $1000, and our photographer was $1000, we don’t have a florist or a limo company…) and we’re really concerned about having to pay $600 for a non-customized, non-religious ceremony.
Do you know any officiants in NYC or Nassau County who are reasonably priced? Or should we just go to City Hall on the Friday before our Sunday wedding and cancel the ceremony on the day of the wedding? I actually thought about going to City Hall on the Friday, making the marriage official, and then having a “ceremony” in front of family and friends on the day of our wedding so that we can have professional photographs of our “ceremony”. Ugh – I don’t know what to do!
