Has anyone here had trouble losing weight on Zoloft / other SSRIs? I’m on a very low dose, but my doctor told me when I started it about a year ago that I could expect 5-10 pounds of weight gain. I did have the minor weight gain and now I’m finding it IMPOSSIBLE to lose weight. I’ve tried a Keto diet, HIIT workouts… I don’t eat any processed foods. I know it’s more than muscle gains because some of my clothes are more snug.
The only thing I can attribute it to is the Zoloft. I’m on the Zoloft for panic attacks, which I think I have under control now, and am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this while on it and if it’s worth it to get off it??

Yes. I had always been thin (100lbs on a 5’4″ frame) but gained about 45 lbs on zoloft in my mid 20s. Could not lose any of it for a couple years while on it. I lost 25lbs relatively easily some time after stopping zoloft, I am pretty sure I could go back to 100-110 lbs but I got really into fitness and now I have lots more muscle and I’m stable at 120lbs.
That being said, zoloft helped me get through a very difficult time, I would do it again if I needed it but now it has an almost hallucinatory side effect on me.

mrsnovitski : I never been on Zoloft.. but from what I heard from people who have.. everyone gains weight on it and has an impossible time losing it untill they get off it. Unfortunatelly. I have never heard of anyone who didn kot gain weight on Zoloft or anyone who didnt have a hard time loosing it while on Zoloft. Also from what I hear it absolutely kills everyones sex drive.

I’ve never been on Zoloft but I started celexa about two or three months ago. Personally I lost ten lbs really fast on it and I’ve kept it off so far. It suppresses my appetite a lot so no complaints here

I was prescribed Zoloft, but won’t take it due to what I have heard and read about weight gain…😟

I’ve been on a number of anti depressants including Zoloft and have found with all of them I gained and retained about 15lbs. Its VERY hard for me to lose weight while on an anti depressant. Part of the reason why I have weaned off most of my meds and am finding alternatives to managing my depression. This includes therapy, exercise and diet change.

So I’m on a different SSRI called Lexapro, it’s more geared towards anxiety than depression but it still does help with that and there is less of a chance for weight gain. I’ve only been on it for two weeks but so far no extra pounds.
I wonder if you could talk to your health care provider about switching? It’s risky if you have been managed well by another drug but it could work too and have less side effects.

I eat clean and exercise – something I’ve always done and never seen any weight difference when on Zoloft. Before getting pregnant I was in my best shape when on the medication – lost 40 pounds without any issues. Also, my sex drive didn’t diminish but increased. I was pregnant while on the medication and continued the medication through my pregnancy and continued to have sex frequently. I am also bf on this medication and losing my baby weight at a steady pace.
Everyone reacts differently to different medications. Some people gain, some lose, some don’t see any difference. I always heard the weight gain with bcp but never experienced that either.
Getting off my medication is not an option for me.

I was on viibryd, a different ssri & gained 15 lbs…I weighed 100 lbs to begin with so 15 lbs is HUGE for someone like me (& I used to not gain d end if I tried). I started exercising & running 5 miles 5 days a week. I didn’t lose a single pound the entire 4 months I ran but I didn’t gain any then either. I got off it & switched to lexapro. I’m slowly losing weight now (I’m done 3-4 lbs).
