Okay ladies, I've become a little obsessed with the cardigan with your wedding dress look. I don't know if it's a trend I missed out on, but I just recently found it and decided I loved the idea. I've been searching for a while now for something to cover my arms in my dress, I am a little self conscious about my arms, they could use to be a little more toned! lol But, though desperate, my search has turned up dry. I am picky, and nothing seemed to match my dress right in the stores. I looked online and though there really are some beautiful things out there, I just found some of it to be too fussy. My wedding is just a mesh up of all the fun stuff myself and my FI love (I admit mostly what I love!) It's eclectic and hopefully fun! A little vintage, a little modern, and a little nature-ish. My dress is elegant, at least in my opinion, I just love it (after months of thinking I wanted a new one! Silly me!). I honestly think the cardigan look is perfect for me, it's simplistic but still elegant. What do you ladies think? I've done a little homework and found some pictures I liked showing off this look.
I do have some detail on my dress, some beading on the bodice and what not. But I don't think it will hide it or take away from it. This picture shows a lot of detail on a girls dress but it's perfectly visible.

And this is another great picture.

And this one is a bit fancier! lol

Purple is my main wedding color!

I LOOOOOVE cardigans with wedding dresses. If we were getting married earlier in the Spring, I absolutely would do it! I love how it can add a punch of color. So pretty!
i think it looks cute ! i feel like it would kinda have to go with your theme ? i dont plan on wearing one but i wouldnt be against anyone that does or has.
oh gosh. i totally love the fancy wrap one. i wish i could find it online!
I don't like the look of colorful cardigans with the wedding dress. It just looks too casual to me. If you need sleeves, what about something sheer or lacy?

ETA - I know everything about this picture is terrible, but this is what a quick search yielded. You get the idea!
im going to wear one, depending on the weather maybe not during the ceremony but for sure for some pics and throughout the night. were getting married at my FIL cabin outside so it just makes sense to have something to cover up with.
I'm in love with this look!! I really intended to do it for my day-after shoot, but forgot my cardigan :-(
ETA: i got my cardigan for my engagement pics from the new york and company outlet near my town. try looking at their website http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/cat/Apparel/Sweaters?addFacet=1002%3Acat60038
Thanks for the feed back ladies :)
@redheadem: Lace is absolutely out of the question, it looks terrible with my dress (which is diamond white organza) it's just a miserable clash, I wish it weren't because I wanted a lace element in my wedding, but it's just not good!
@troublesmom: Wearing it for the ceremony was something I was debating as well. I am having an indoor wedding simply because Ohio's weather is really unpredictable! It could be freezing and rainy, or wicked hot. But either way my venue will accommodate with AC or heating. Can't beat that. I also have options for beautiful outside pictures so it's the best of both worlds. I know it's a great look in pictures, but I've never really seen and ceremony pictures...Maybe I should do some more homework and see! lol
@RAWR.its.BREN: Hello date twin! Check out Old Navy: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?searchCID=68131&vid=0&pid=898257&scid=898257102
They rock!
im wearing a cardigan with my dress and it took me AGES to find the perfect one.
i realised that nothing would go with my giant ballgown skirt unless it was a cropped cardigan. here is the one i found in the end, on ebay of all places...
this is just a pic of me prancing around the house in my dress, cardi and hair piece.. so of course, i am not done up for the wedding hehe....

@deerdonna : Thanks for that :) I was thinking of doing a cropped one as well but wasn't sure. Will you be wearing it for your ceremony though?
It's nice to know I have a date twin out there! I was told the first weekend of any month was a weird time to get married...Uh, whatever! Makes no sense lol.
Can you post a picture of your dress? Or did I miss a picture? A plain short cropped cardigan is perfect I think! I love the look.
Not a fan at all. It just looks too casual with a fancy dress.. theres plently of formal coverup options. But maybe I'm just too traditional in that sense.
I really like the cardigan look - but I feel like it tends towards a casual style...
So, my preference would be to wear the cardigan just for the reception...
Another option is to get a bolero - I found one I loved, it was actually handmade of satin I believe. It looked much fancier! :)
I love it! I think it's so fun. I was thinking about doing it as well but I think I need something a little heavier since my wedding is a winter wedding.
Check out BHLDN. They are pricey but stunning. I like the second to last one the best: http://www.bhldn.com/shop_bridesmaids-party-goers_cover-ups?showAll=1
J. Crew and Ann Taylor Loft have some simple but nice ones as well. :)
love ModCloth, too!

Thanks so much for this post :-) I thought about doing a cardigan aaaaages ago but couldn't find anything I liked. In the meantime I went out and bought a faux fur bolero but after reading this post, I remebered how badly I wanted one so I just quickly went over to the shops and found a cardi in the perfect colour for $10 just in case I change my mind on the day.
I LOVE the cardigan look. Would you do a purple cardi..? I think a pop of colour like that is so fun! The one in the pic with the little ruffle is gorgous. I chose my shoes first which made it easier to pick the bolero and cardi. Allanah Hill is an Aussie designer that does gorgeous knits.

I won't be wearing one for the ceremony, but I will probably get one to put on afterwards. All of my girls are wearing them for the ceremony though!
I will probably be wearing a purple one to be honest, the color is just fantastic and so saturated. I love it. Satin boleros are really nice, and formal. But that's honestly not what I am looking for, I'm not a formal girl. My cake topper is owls and my FI isn't wearing a suit or tux, just a nice shirt, a vest and tie and some dress pants. Much like the look of the groom in the first picture I posted in my OP. Sure I picked a fancy dress, but I picked a fun casual bubble veil (against the advice of some people who wanted me to wear a long cathedral length veil.) I want comfort and I just hate the way boleros fit around my shoulders and my bust.
I still want a dressy looking one, add some flowers or something to make it look more formal.
@KellyLouise : That purple cardi is spot on! Love that color!
Also, Modcloth is amazing! I actually considered buying from them because of some of the vintage flair in my wedding.
For those who asked, a picture of my dress...unfitted still! Goes to the seamstress in June.

So glad to see this thread got some action! Thanks ladies!
I ordered an inexpensive cardigan from Old Navy to have just in case I was chilly. I didn't put it on until the end of the evening.
I can't lie, I really like this one even though it's not purple lol! But it would probably just block off the detail of my dress. I have to be careful cause the beading is down the side. But it's cute! lol

I was a cardigan bride! I am still loving the look of a pop of color with a wedding dress :) I got my cardigan from Target for $19.99. I would just keep your eye open and something will catch it!
I am on the cardigan band wagon. My dress is strappless and I have a number of scars on my shoulders/arms that I am trying to cover up... Enter shrug....
I will be wearing this one on my big day, in a olive green colour to match the belt I am making for my dress, I have yet to make it though.
I definitely prefer the sheer or lacy options. The fancier normal cardigan is okay, but it still looks a little too casual IMO. I'm not a fan of a regular cardigan with a dress as "dressy" as yours.
There are lots of options to check out on Etsy! Boleros, cardigans, every colour etc.
Well seeing that Princess Kate wore a cardigan over her second dress for the reception I can't agree that it is too casual - if it was good enough for Buckingham Palace it was good enough for me! I wore a cardigan before and after our wedding, we got married in November and it had snowed 2 weeks before so I got cardigans for myself and my bridesmaids. We didn't wear them during the ceremony or reception, but I think they looked cute in the few pics they made it into. I doubt I can add pics from my phone but I'll load one up later!
I love the cardigan look. I plan on wearing one for the reception. We're having a very casual wedding so it will really fit the feel of it.
Also the weather here in Iceland is so unpredictable that some kind of cover up is pretty much a necessity.
I actually think it's really adorable. But I'm a very casual person in general.
I love colorful cardigans with wedding dresses, obviously. :)
I wore mine for the reception

I have never liked formal boleros or cover-ups, so I totally fell in love with the trend of cardigans + wedding dresses. Though it does depend on the style of the dress and cardigan it's paired with, I think it can look just charming. (I am also from perpetually-drizzly Seattle, so there's also the practicality factor playing into this, haha.)
That said... I, too, donned a cardigan at my reception! My wedding dress was a very simple ballgown, so I just chose a non-fussy cardigan that matched my husband's neck tie. I think it added the perfect pop of color and personality to my ensemble. =]

@maraschino: So cute!
I also wore a pink cardigan for the reception, sort of like the purple ruffled one in the OP. I'm not finding it at the moment, but this one might be cute over a wedding dress (although a bit of a splurge, but at least you could wear it again!).

I really hate the idea. But thats just a personal opinion. I feel like you have any day to wear a cardigan and why would you want to wear it on your wedding?
I think it makes a dress extremely casual, if thats the look you're going for then do it! :)
I am a fan of the cardigan with the dress. For the entire wedding, probably not? Maybe for a few photos and to stay warm during dinner before dancing. Ivy & Aster are coming out with a line of Bridal Cardigans in their new line, Kate Middleton really made an impact on the bridal industry, making it a bit more formal.
