I think that a LOT of bridal salons do this, and it makes no sense at all. My bridesmaids all got their dresses (Dessy After Six) at different places, and they all came in multiple sizes too large. I've always suspected it's because they want to charge you for alterations...
Jim Hjelm runs small, but I do suspect they changed sizes in order to charge you extra to get alterations done there. I spoke with them when i ordered my girls dresses (Jim Hjelms). I went through Pearls Place and saved 1100.00 (I purchased 8 bridesmaids dresses for my girls). Nice savings!
I have just taken to telling them right off the bat that we will be having them altered elsewhere. They did this to me on my wedding dress, and for sure I don't want to let them charge me $100 to take the bodice in one inch when I can have it done by a local seamstress for less than half that amount.

Just a few words of advice for ladies ordering Jim Hjelm bridesmaid dresses from Victorian Rose in Raleigh, NC... they ordered my friends dresses that were 2-4 sizes too large for them and everyone had to spend at least $100 getting them altered. 3 of the girls had to have the dresses completely taken apart and re-made. I don't know if this is a Jim Hjelm issue, or an issue with the store but I just wanted to caution people who were ordering them. It was already an expensive dress ($258) and to add that much on for alterations was crazy... and it was all because the sizes were so out of whack. They ordered my new sister-in-law who is normally a size 12-14... a size 22. Luckily, after she stopped crying, she called back and talked to a different person and they ordered her an 18. When she got it, they still took about a whole size out of it. The dresses that had to be completely re-made because they were so big didn't even look like they were supposed to which was kind of a bummer... Other than that, we were fairly happy with the service at the store.
