Carribean Honeymoon – is a big resort for us?!

FI and I just got back from Aruba for vacation. We were underwhelmed, and it would have probably been made worse by staying in a resort (we rented a cute little house). Aruba in general, is…. meh once you leave the resorts. It’s a desert island, so I guess we should have seen that coming.

But we try not to do resorts because we like the experience of shopping in local stores and dining in local joints and just being around a bunch of people who aren’t American. When we were in Mexico, we stayed on a little island in a resort-ish hotel. But we ate there only for breakfast and instead sampled the food from all the local spots. We really only stayed there because the house rentals available were meh and we wanted a private beach. We definitely wanted nothing to do with the craziness of Cancun or the homogeneity of an all-inclusive. I did get food poisoning once, though, and that was mind-bendingly awful. I could have done without that. And we did see a large amount of poverty, neglect, and other things that make a human soul squeemish.

FutureMrsSamFoster:  Although we have not been there yet, we are really excited to go to Belize (Ambergris Caye specifically). There are no big-name resorts/all inclusives on the island.  It looks so beautiful and relaxing, but you can actually explore local restaurants, shops, etc.

We are heading to Cancun to an all inclusive resort. We booked ours on funjet.com. It includes flight, transportation, food, drinks and gratuity for the entire time there. Check it out. Most resorts include multiple sister resorts that you can visit/view while you are there…

FutureMrsSamFoster:  I think our next Caribbean vacation will either be Dominica or Costa Rica. We were thinking Roatan until the murder and kidnapping rate of Honduras exploded. Grant it, it’s worse in the cities. I also really want to go to St. Andres, a tiny Columbian island in the middle of the Caribbean by Nicaragua, Panama, and Columbia. It’s more of a European and columbian destination spot; its supposed to be a beautiful archipelago.

FutureMrsSamFoster:  What is your budget?

And I agree with @sarahalthea – I was not impressed with Aruba.

We went to Sandals Grande Riviera in Ocho Rios for our honeymoon in February and absolutely loved it! In fact, we loved it so much, we’ve already booked to go to the new Sandals in Grenada in 2016! We didn’t spend much time off resort, but you certainly can if that’s what you’re wanting to do…

sarahalthea:  I would never go back either.  We were there in the weeks before the Natalie Holloway disappearence.  Any place outside the resort gave me a really creepy vibe.  I didn’t find the resorts that nice (or the beaches).  Also, the locals kept asking us if we wanted to buy drugs.  Ummm NO!

We went to Grand Cayman for 3 weeks this past summer and it was MUCH nicer.  We didn’t stay at an all inclusive, but I imagine there are some on the island.  There is great diving and snorkling if your are interested in that, and lots of water sports/activites.  And all the locals were incredibly nice and helpful.  There wasn’t much to do in Georgetown, but we were fine with that.

We are going to Jamaica this October for a wedding, although my expectations are pretty low.  HOWEVER, I am trying to convinve my SO to stay at The Caves Resort (which I think may be all inclusive.)  I have friends who went and they said it is absolutely AMAZING!

I’ve also heard Turks and Caicos and Antigua are really nice too.  They are next on my list. 🙂

FutureMrsSamFoster:  Are you looking at stay on resorts or places that you can leave the resorts? My fiance and I have decided to do the Southern Carribean Cruise that leaves from Puerto Rico so I may not but a huge help on this one. From my searches the popular places I see most people going to are Mexico, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), St. Lucia (Pretty much anything carribean), Cuba, Jamaica, Hawaii, Europe. I think just finding a couple of locations you want to go to and doing your research about the safety off resorts will help you narrow down so you can still get the feel for the country without loosing that authentic feel you are looking for. Good Luck in you searches!!
