I do not believe that they will give you cash… Maybe you will get lucky with a nice salesperson?

I used to work at Bed, Bath, & Beyond in college and they gave back cash whenever you brought back an item off of your registry.  You didnt need a reciept, it just needed to be on there as purchased.

In fact couples would bring back everything off the registries after the wedding or shower just to get the cash.  It was such a PITA but I can understand the people wanting the $ especially if they are left with half of a set a china, etc.

I actually went to BBB yesterday to return some things and they DO NOT give cash back. The manager stated that they have an agreement with the credit card companies and they are unable to do that. I’m not sure if I was just unlucky, but I wouldn’t rely on getting cash. The one place that DID give me cash back was Crate and Barrel. I was expecting a store credit, but the woman told me I would receive a check in the mail for everything I returned. It was a pleasant surprise!

Bed Bath and Beyond does give cash for gift returns but you have to really insist on it, and even then it’s a bit complicated on their end and it takes forever.

Would you be okay for returning the partial sets for store credit?

We registered at Macy’s and got gift cards for anything we returned.  I didn’t ask for cash back because store credit is specified in their written registry returns policy.

At macy’s you can return everything for a giant giftcard of what the guest paid for it.  i.e. if they bought it on sale, you get the sale price, but if they bought it at full price, you get the full price back on your gift card.  You don’t need the receipt for returns.

You can NOT return gifts to BBB for cash. Once upon a time, a while ago they would do it, but unfortunately people decided to register for insane amounts of items with the intention of returning it all for cash. Needless to say, greedy people ruined it for everyone. Also, in terms of the credit card company, that manager was correct. Unless you have the ORIGINAL recepit, you can only get credit. Think about it this way: If that guest bought your set of dishes with a credit card, and then you returned it and got cash, then the credit card company just got ripped off (think interest charges on the cash advance programs). BBB and any retailer can get fined bigtime for this practice. In my opinion, if you don’t want gifts, DO NOT REGISTER!
