Smokey the cat has been insisting on constantly lying down on my desk between me and my keyboard.  Then if I type, she hisses at me for disturbing her slumber.

It's gotten to the point where I can't get any work done!

Does anyone's cat do this?  How can I get her to stop?

Both of my cats do this! I used to feel bad for disturbing them, but now I just relocate them to another spot.

Sometimes. I try and relocate them to somewhere else near me so I can still pet them, but they are not directly in front of me. Sort of a compromise with the kitty!

I have a cat house next to my desk, and move her there and pet her there... she just prefers to have my undivided attention.

Of course she does, she is a cat!

I saw a card at Borders today, it read "Cats were onced worshipped like the gods, they have never forgotten this."

    Too true.

Mine also does this. I just relocate her to my lap. She also likes to sleep on my desk with the mouse in between her paws and under her chin. She is a silly cat.

I don't have a cat, but my when my dog wants my attention she'll run around like mad all over the room, across the keyboard and sometimes she'll accidently close what I'm doing! Lately, I've been giving her bones and toys to distract her while i'm on the computer. I know cats can be very stubborn so I'm not sure if this would work in your situation :(

It's basically impossible for me to pull out a book or my computer without my cats doing this.  I have to lock them in the basement or lock myself in a room they cannot access (otherwise they'll just sit outside the door, crying and scratching at the door. they're really emotionally needy).

*waves hand* I have three girls and within a space of 15 minutes I have them all over me.

Narriko is the worse and she innocently starts on the back of the chair and then climbs down the arm and flops onto my hands/keyboard/mouse.

(speak of the devil she just jumped up!)

Okay she is gone.  Here is my secret.  keep a noise maker around your desk (doesn't even have to be that loud, just something they don't like the sound of) If not, do a treat container, shake/whistle/ drop the thing and they will go running off.

I have hardwood floors behind us, so I take a treat and throw it out onto the floor. They run off and I can type.

    Good luck!

    Ooh a noisemaker...

When you make the noise, does she hiss or get upset?

Nope she just startles up and trots off.

(I'm typing over her right now) lol

Also, she likes thick plastic rings (like milk caps) so I tease her with them and throw them over my shoulder and she runs off to chase that as well.

Doesn't that train her to sit on your desk whenever she wants a treat?

Probably... lol I hadn't thought about that, although even when she doesn't get a treat she is on my desk.  I come home and she is there, then her sister....a few minutes later another sister.  But, they only get treats in the kitchen, so no matter where I shake the treat container, they run off to the kitchen.

If you don't want to use treats, keep a bottle of water and dab some on your fingers and flick it at her, usually that will make them leave the desk too.

What kind of toys does Smokey like?

Smokey plays with a string on a stick thingy... that's about it.

A friend told me to put catnip on her cat house, which is next to my desk... I might try that.  I've also tried moving the cat house away from my desk, which seems to help sometimes!  But not always...

If they think they are not the center of attention...they make it so.  That is why it doesn't always work.

Can you tempt her with a string/stick thing and then put it on the floor so she hops down?

I think the noisemaker is the best bet tho.  ( can/bottle with some paper towels and some change, tape it up/seal it) and shake it on occasions, she might hiss, but most likely as she is getting down. My girls don't hiss at it they just get scared and run off.

She only plays with that string when I "animate" it. :-)

I'll try the noisemaker and the catnip!!

Our new kitten LOVES my laptop. Particularly standing on the keyboard while the mouse moves around the screen. I keep pushing her off but she keeps climbing back on, it's annoying and yet adorable. After about 10 minutes of back and forth with her though I get really mad and put her down on the floor with some stern "NO!! GLORY!!" and she usually gets the message and goes to find a mouse to play with. One of my other cats (yes we have 3, I'm creeping into crazy cat lady territory) is super cuddly ane he'll lay across my arms in front of the laptop. He's pretty good though and when he does this I'll realize I've been on the computer A LOT and I'll stop for 15 minutes to give him some love and attention and then he's usually content to leave me be or curl up on my lap.

haha this thread cracks me up... I don't have much advice to help you (that hasn't already been said) but it reminds me of my mom's cat, he loves to lay in her lap, but if she laughs, talks, or breathes too loud he will meow at her, if she keeps doing it he'll growl, and if she keeps doing it he's smack her (he's declawed but still!)  He's got so much attitude, she just tries to keep quiet to avoid making him mad (refer to the cat peeing in the house post) but if she really has things to do she'll just push him off, he usually gets mad enough that he "didn't want to be there anyway" and he'll find somewhere else to lay. haha

Too funny. I have a laptop, and I'm usually on the couch with it. My kitty likes to sit on my wrists (or try to) as I type, so I have to type around him. I try to move him to sit next to me, and he'll sometimes stay there if it's cozy enough. That wouldn't work if you're on a desktop computer though. :(

My one cat ALWAYS used to do this... but now she's gained a little too much weight and she doesn't really fit!  She now likes to sit on my lap while I use the computer, which I don't mind too much.

Our cat doesn't like to be that close to us so he's never done that. I consider myself lucky after reading this post. my old cat used to do that, but he would lay in front of the monitor and the keyboard and mouse were underneath so at least he was minimally in the way. But he loved to lay on my school books while I was doing homework. I miss that cat (my ex has him)

Our newer cat does this all the time, she sits up right in front of the screen, so I always scoop her up and set her behind me on the computer chair, and we repeat this until I give up or she moves onto my lap.

<------ Our orange boy sits on my lap until my legs fall asleep.  Our tortie can't be bothered to come all the way into the office.

My cat does this because he doesnt like it when I dont pay attention to him! Or if I am working at home he will come and sit on all my papers to tell me to stop working!

Ha, my cat used to do this all the time. I usually just shut her up in the bathroom or closed the door, depending on which room I was in. If I wasn't trying to get real work done, I just kept moving her til she got bored with that game. Or I threw something in a place that was hard for her to get to.

My cats loved loafing on my computer.  I think maybe because it was a warm spot.  How am I supposed to type when you are on the keys, silly cat?

I think they eventually learned not to after I would pick them up and move them whenever they would come near.

Try relocating her to your lap. I've got a cat that tries to lay on the keyboard or book or newspaper or game board that you're trying to use/read. It's cute, but if you even look at her she rolls around and tries to convince you to pet her.

My cat used to do this too, but she's really small (runt of a litter) so she's not really in the way too much so it's not much of a bother. Unless I'm using the mouse though - then she's batting at the screen and I have to move her.

I also find moving her from the desk to my shoulder and talking to her usually works well, but again, she's tiny so that likely won't work for everyone. And if she sees the mouse moving, the leap from my shoulder to the desk can be pretty funny.

Wow, mine also has an aversion to the computer....glad to see it's a common feline habit....mine likes to lay on my lap, touching the keyboard. I always thought it was a jealousy thing. =)

When I was in high school, my one cat used to come in and sit on my math book while I was doing homework. Instead of trying to move her, I just went and started working on the other page, so of course, she got up and moved to the page I was working on. My math teacher had like 6 cats, so I thought she would understand when I didn't turn in my homework, but she didn't.

Sorry I don't have much help for you. 2 of our cats like to hang out by the computer, but they sit next to the keyboard so they aren't in the way. Of course, if you don't pet them, they start to headbutt you in the arm.
