Please help Bees this cat is on veery thin ice with my fiance and I am doing anything I can think of to save her!
She is a year old and had never been exposed to much noise before, one day my sister came over for a visit and brought her two-year old son. my nephew was afraid of the cat right away, the cat was just curious as she had never been around children before..she was creeping close to him and sniffing him and then my nephew let out a frightened-high pitched squeal..this squeal sent the cat into complete bullistics! she went absolutely rabid and tried to attack the toddler, luckily we all got in between and she wasnt able to harm the child though she did shred me, my fiance and my sister.
We took her to the vet to ensure it was not a medical problem and they said it was likely caused by stress, 4 hours later we still could not go near her in her kennel, she was hissing and snarling and growling..we flung open her kennel so she had access to food, water and litter box, then left to my moms for the night. When we returned home the next day she was back to normal..totally sweet and cuddly.
Now yesterday my fiances new dog came over, same thing, at first she was just curious and was sniffing at him in his kennel and even when he barked she got frightened but didnt snap..then, the dog whined to get out of his kennel (the same high pitched whine my nephew did) and again she went bizerk! tried to attack me, defacated all over the house and just in total rabid mode. We got her into the laundry room where she has litter and water and turned out the lights and left her alone, this morning we opened the door to check and she was STILL insanely mad and aggressive!
She is normally so sweet and has such a great personality and I love her to death, but she is obviously unstable and anytime a child whines or something else makes a high pitched squeal she goes rabid for hours…obviously she is dangerous. I am getting some softpaws after work today (I dont support declawing) so that at least she cant do so much damage but does anyone know how I can treat her or cure her of her noise phobia?? I know some ppl might suggest getting rid of the dog but we will have children one day and so that really wont solve the problem long term.

It is called fear aggression. Our cat went through this once for about tw weeks after my son scared the crap out of him. Basically they had to make nice before the cat settled down.

Talk to your vet about the possibility of medication, and other things you can try at home, or get a referral for a veterinary behaviorist (not a trainer, please). Feliway is a good option- but you need to have it in place consistently for a couple of months (I think it was weeks to about 2 months, check the package) to determine if it’s helpful. It’s not a “plug it in and see a change overnight” kind of thing.
I had a cat like this, and things only escalated no matter what I did (and I’m a vet tech with access to endless veterinary sources of information, consults, meds etc). I ended up euthanizing because she was biting my family, and attacking all the other pets. I couldn’t rehome her in good conscience like that, and her quality of life sucked because she was constantly separated away from everyone at the end. I truly don’t want to sound heartless but if you exhaust all efforts and she doesn’t improve, your family should come first and cat bites are NO joke- ~80% become infected, a majority within 24hrs and if not treated immediately can require hospitalization and IV antibiotics.

I just saw this topic on a show called “My Cat From Hell”. They totally got it under control with play and clicker training within like a month or so… the cat did a total 180! It was amazing.
There doesn’t seem to be an episode guide here, but if you spend some time watching the video clips on this site, I’m sure you’ll find some insight!

I have to second watching episodes of My Cat From Hell. That guy, Jackson Galaxy, is like the cat whisperer! When I adopted my cat, I thought I wouldn’t ever really be able to pet her, except maybe sometimes on her head (when my niece and I were painting, I actually painted a picture of myself and my SO with the cat, and I wrote “We are your people, we love you. Please don’t bite us” on it, and I taped it down by her food and water bowls lol). She would literally stalk me sometimes like I was just a giant mouse to her! I watched some episodes of My Cat From Hell, and some of the things I learned really helped. I now have a happy kitty who doesn’t bite/stalk me, lets me trim her nails, and snuggles with me every night. Good luck!
