I’m also interested in this answer!  I’ve been thinking about it,  I’m worried about all the little things going wrong that day and I’ll be too busy to do anything about it.  How much are they charging?

I’m also interested on anyone’s experience with this. Our caterer comes with a coordinator and we’ve decided to just have her run the show since we really like her. But I still get nervous about it sometimes!

I hired an independent DOC because the venue DOC that was first assigned to us seemed disorganized and unreliable and I was worried about things going smoothly.  She left the venue about a month before the wedding (I’m not sure if by choice or otherwise) and we were assigned a new venue DOC who was MUCH better and did a great job… and as it turned out the independent DOC that I hired was a disappointment and actually added stress to the day instead of relieving it.  But, I think it depends highly upon whether you trust your venue DOC and also how complicated your wedding day timeline and detials are.  Our wedding day had a few more details than the average wedding but I believe our venue DOC could have handled it all on her own.  I hope that helps!  For reference when I was looking for my wedding in Boston independent DOCs charged between $1100 – $4500 for the day.

Our catering manager told us that she would also do the coordination, but we ended up getting a planner who also did the Day of Coordination with an assistant, and I still think with 3 people on the job they were all crazy busy the entire day.  My planner also did much more than the caterer would have done, like packing-up everything at the end of the night and bringing it to the best man’s house.  We did not have to worry about a single thing that evening, it was worth every penny.

I have several vendors that offer coordinating and I still hired my own. I figured that the catering coordinator’s focus will be on the catering (and not the day as a whole) and the venue’s coordinator will be busy organizing vendors and not necesarily prepared to wrangle guests/family for pictures, for example. Even my DJ offers coordination services (included) but again, I think that’s more for timeline than like laying out programs on chairs.
