I’m sitting here just in SHOCK. Less than a week after selecting our caterer (a family ‘friend’ of FI’s parents who usually doesn’t do weddings but promised to do something special for us), and finishing up our menu (FI and I literally decided on our four hors d’oeuvres this evening), our caterer is dropping a bombshell.
They emailed and said that they had been ‘a little overly enthusastic with their original quotes’ and now they want to know if it’s ‘okay’ to charge us nearly twice the amount? Um. NO. I mean, seriously? That’s not a LITTLE overly enthusiastic, that’s downright LYING if you ask me. We could have gone with two other caterers when we drove a few hours to Santa Barbara last weekend to check them out, (that’s where the wedding will be held), and we blew them off to go with this couple instead.
We have a very, very large catering budget, but this is just outrageous, especially for what they offered us. Our guests had two options for entrees, either a grilled ribeye with pinot noir sauce, or mahi mahi with cilantro pesto. We had a rocket and parmesan salad, 4 mid-priced hors d’oeuvres for cocktail time (gazpacho shooters, crostini, crab cakes, and chicken quesadillas, for crying out loud) and a mini dessert bar. It’s not like they’re doing a 6 course meal and a full wedding cake, you know?
And yes, all of it is delicious, but spending double for our projected guest count of 235 people? NO WAY. I know if we actually had that much to spend, we could feed 500 with the same quality of food so easily. Sheesh.
Ugh, I’m just so mad right now. FI’s asleep because he has a huge day at work right now, so I’m hastily forwarding the original email to his mom and mine, so they can see what’s happened. Obviously we’re going to have to find a new caterer. 🙁 I’m so mad, because this was a major To-Do that I wanted to get done ASAP, and now we have to search all over again, plus take the time to drive back out to Santa Barbara later in the summer.
