I’m sorry to hear that. I would try to get them to stick to their orginal price (or close to it) and if they don’t, let them know that you would walk. To think that they are supposed to be friends of the family, they are really doing bad business.

Why did the price suddenly jump?

Drop them asap and find another one. This is a red flag for you. Luckily, you still have plenty of time to find a new one. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. 🙁

It sounds to me like they are willing to negotiate. If they asked if the change in price is okay, it seems that they made an honest mistake in quoting you a price they could not offer but can potentially meet in the middle. Maybe you can discuss changing some of the apps. and agree of a price that is reasonable for both parties. You said their first price came in under your budget and you are happy with the food, you don’T know another caterer will be able to beat the prices with the same quality food so I would try to negotiate before giving up. Maybe you can just tell them, the new price is not going to work for you and let them know what your budget is and that you are willing to pay extra to keep the crab cakes but can switch out another appetizer and hope to come down to a workable price. It can’T hurt to negotiate and if it is sucessful you’ll have a good caterer and not need to start from scratch.
