- Wedding: March 2013
It’s keeping me up tonight –
I’m frustrated with catering costs.
I don’t have a lot of choices for catering because my wedding location is remote.
The catererer I have right now worked with my budget, which I think is more than adequate to feed 150 people but apparently is on the low side for the location of our wedding. She comes highly recommended, however when FI and I tasted her appetizers, we were underwhelmed.
Now, the heart of my rant, tables and chairs.
The caterer charges $45 per table no matter the size (72″ round or 36″ cocktail, whatever), it also includes basic white linens. And she charges $8 per chair plus $1 per chair to move them from the ceremony to the reception. These are the basic white folding chairs – she said she would check to see how much it would be if we wanted to upgrade to a nicer chair. Plus an overall labor charge for the wedding, plus a set up and break down fee.
I got quotes from two local rental companies on tables and chairs. I want to use 48×48 square tables to make rectangle tables – I cannot afford to do that at the caterer’s price, so I wanted to see how her prices stacked up to the places she may in fact be renting her equipment from.
Well, the rental companies charge $14 for the 48×48 tables, and $6.00 each for chiavari chairs. Chiavari! I was floored to get these quotes given what the caterer intends on charging us. She’s upcharging us on tables and chairs 30%-300% and then tacking on her set-up and break-down fees and labor charges. (note – the rental company fees include delivery and pick-up but not set-up).
I am so pissed. We’re all trying to make a buck in this world but this seems outrageous to me.
Please folks – either explain her business model rationally or give me advice on what to do.
