I’m new here but I am in desperate need of help!
We are looking to pin down on a venue this month, so there’s a definite time crunch. We are trying to decide which venue to book, but it is hard to do that without knowing potential cost of catering. We have inquired a few on a venue’s preferred list, but they are all at least $100 and up, and that does not include fees and in some cases, staff. One place actually quoted us needing 20-30 staff or something like that, and each staff at $30 per hour for 9 hours. Needless to say, we are not considering them anymore… or is that normal?
Anyway, we are inviting 200 guests (I’m secretly hoping not all 200 come!) so catering is going to be our biggest cost. Any brides in the area who had a big wedding like ours, and would be willing to share caterer’s name and price? We are wondering if it might be more cost effective to just pay the $1,000 to get off the preferred list!
We are located in Boston, MA, and we will be having our ceremony in Newton.
Many thanks in advance!

litopoeticme: We’re getting married in Boston at a venue that includes catering, but in my previous research (while we were still considering other venues), I found that $100/person is at the low end for Boston. While I’m sure there are more affordable caterers out there, I think you’re going to have a hard time finding something that’s still good and much cheaper than that.
Essentially, if you can find a caterer that would save you more than $1000, then it’s worth it. If you can’t, then it’s not worth it. Also consider that working with vendors that have worked at your venue before is a HUGE plus.
Like I said, our venue comes with catering and staff, so it’s a little different, but when you include table settings, all food (including cake), alcohol and staff (plus fees and service charges), our venue will be about $225/person.

annb9: Thanks for the info! Do you mind sharing where you are having your wedding? We are also considering a place that includes catering, so maybe that’s what we’ll do after all… But I’m just having a hard time letting go of another venue. Sigh.

litopoeticme: We’re getting married at the Boston College Club in the Financial District. It’s on the 36th floor of the Bank of America building, and has BEAUTIFUL 360 degree views of Boston. We fell in love with it right away. I also think it’s a great deal for what we get and for its location.
Which venue do you have your heart set on?

annb9: We are considering Fruitlands Musuem, which has catering included, and Elm Bank, which is venue only. Your venue looks gorgeous! If I wasn’t so dead set on having an outdoors wedding, I would’ve looked into indoor locations. The FMIL would probably preferred an indoor place though, but it is my wedding after all! Haha!
