Just out of curiousity.
I remember I was so overwhelmed by the sheer number of Saints to choose from when I was younger and my mom was so frustrated with me asking questions about them and told me to 'just pick one!' haha. i ended up picking Saint Therese (Lisieux) because she was most relatable to me and was young (hey I was a teenager and valued youth haha). I was so intimidated by many of the Saints and all that they had accomplished that Therese stood out to me b/c she spoke of simple works and devotion being just as important as the big stuff. I remember feeling very humbled and comforted by her.
Looking back though I might have picked Katharine Drexel b/c she really stood for so much that I believe; she is just AWESOME. i think her and I are soul sisters lol.
Anyways, who did you pick and why?
I picked St. Anne because that's my middle name, and I also thought it was cool that she was Mary's mom & Jesus' grandma, lol. Now that I see she's the patron saint of unmarried women and housewives I have to chuckle a bit. Perfect match for me.
@MightySapphire: I remember crossing Joan of Ark out from the very beginning and telling my mom I thought she was a war monger, lol. I think I got yelled at for that. I was trying to be a young pacifist, what can I say. But yes, she is very brave.
St Francis, the patron saint of animals. I think that was when my mom realized I wasn't going to outgrow my plan to become a vet. :-)
Ruth.. She is a Saint, but not a patron of anything, I picked because it is a family name. My Great Great Aunt who was Ruthie, I want to be like her so I chose a saint name that would remind me to follow in her chose. I did not have any idea how this would impact my family but when my grandpa, who was very close to her, found out he teared up no explanation needed he knew why
St. Margaret of Scotland. I just thought she had a neat story. Then all day on my confirmation day my mom called me Margaret, which I thought was really weird. What can I say, she grew up Methodist. :-)
My husband got confirmed young and now can't remember his confirmation name. Sad!
I chose St. Gemma Galgani. Like you, I wanted to have a patron who was young and female. She also had stigmata!
I chose St. Catherine of Siena because I wished my name was Catherine (5 of the 13 girls in my class had a name that derived from Catherine) and I've always loved Italy.
I guess my reasons were a bit selfish and immature. ;)
St Dorothy - patron saint of brides, florists, and gardeners. Works well for now! I originally picked it because I just loved the name. Oh, teenage years.
@AudzinLuv: Me too! My middle name was Anne so that's how I picked.
@jedeve: I picked St. Margaret of Scotland too, because I like her patronage of large families, of learning, and of Scotland (I have Scottish ancestry).
It was so much fun to go through the saints names and choose!
I chose Saint Dymphna - the Patron Saint of the Mentally Ill....yeah I know, but I got confirmed in college and my degree is in Psychology. So, fitting? Plus, cool name.
No one in my confirmation class chose.. they had changed the rules to require some sort of essay in order to get a name and um, no one did. :)
I chose St. Brigid she is one of the patron saints of Ireland and I am love my Irish roots (I am actually a citizen now).
@Lovespearls: That's mine too!!
I chose St. Brigid for my Irish family as well and because I grew up with one of her crosses in my room and it was something special to me.
St Catherine of Alexandria- She announced to her parents that she would only marry someone who surpassed her in beauty, intelligence, wealth, and social status. :) Gutsy girl- she converted many, basically through debate.
We didn't have to choose a saint but I have no idea why. I actually chose the name Marlina b/c that was the name of the family down the street's nanny and she was really more like a big sister to me.
St. Elizabeth - I don't even know why, except that it's a common name in my family! Now I feel bad, knowing that you all know the origins of your saints...
@MsGolightly: dont even feel bad. I mean let's be real at 12/13/14 most of us are picking off of superficial things anyway or just choose randomly. I would totally change mine if I could go back.
I went through RCIA and I chose Patricia. Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland and FH is extremely Irish. Also, Patricia is my FMIL's name and she was my sponser. It was a surprise and it really brought us closer.
I chose Veronica because her name means "true image" of Christ - Vera = true, onica/icon = image. It technically refers to the image of Jesus on Veronica's veil, which was transfered there when out of the kindness of her heart she stopped and wiped Jesus' face when He was carrying the cross. According to legend. But I like the idea in a spiritual sense, that whatever I do and say should reflect Christ to others.
There was also a Saint Veronica Giuliani who was quite a mysticand a stigmatic etc.
I have to admit though that throughout my life I've always been more close to St. Margaret of Scotland who is my patron through my baptismal name. When I was little I used to lie in bed in the morning asking her to please please please make it a snow day :)
Can I ask what the significance/reason is for choosing a Patron Saint? I realize I don't know much about Catholicism, and this sounds like a really nice meaningful tradition. What's the thought behind it, and once you've chosen a Saint, what does this mean?
Thanks! (Hopefully this isn't a repeat question...it looks like it's not).
I went through RCIA and I chose Ruth. It is my grandmother's name and I also liked her story. She stayed with her mother-in-law after her husband died. Since my FMIL was my sponser I thought it was appropriate.
That was so long ago, I don't even remember which saint I chose.
St. Jude - the patron saint of hopeless causes. My grandmother had cancer at the time so for that reason I chose St. Jude.
I chose St. Catherine of Siena, too, because I wanted a young saint and because I loved the name, but especially because I loved how she was a strong woman who was able to convince the Pope to return to Rome when no one else could. :)
@judithsr: your confirmation name is sort of your "Catholic name", and you're supposed to pick a saint that you want to emulate.
@judithsr: I found this clear explanation online:
Choosing a Confirmation name: A name identifies you in a unique way, not just your physical self, but who you are as person. One of the traditional practices in the Church at the time of Confirmation is choosing a name that will remind you of this sacrament. Your prayerful reflection will help you determine that name. You might want to recommit yourself to your Baptismal name since it expresses the relationship that exists between these two sacraments, especially after you reflect on its meaning and discover some of the people who shared your name in Christian history. You might want to choose the name of a saint who represents the type of Christian you wish to be. It is important to learn as much as you can about your patron saint. After all, you are asking this saint to be your friend and advocate for the rest of your life. Whether you decide to stay with your Baptismal name or pick a new name, take the time to research and explore the root meaning of the name, for as Scripture says "Yahweh calls each of us by name."
@Aubergold: Thanks for the reassurance :) I just found out that St. Elizabeth was Mary's older cousin, and "she has the distinction of being one of the first to know about Mary's great blessing as the Mother of God."
It's kind of nice to be somewhat familiar with her story...
@MsGolightly: Thank you for the explanation! that makes a lot of sense. :-)
I don't know much about Catholicism so this is all new to me :-) I like what I'm hearing, though. Do men get to pick patron saints when they're confirmed, too?
I picked Genevieve, as she's the patron saint of disasters. I thought it was funny at the time. Also, she's the patron saint of Paris, and I wanted to go there. I do still like the name!
@bride123: yes all Catholics pick one during the Confirmation process. My FI's is John the Baptist.
