I need some reception venue help. My Fiance and I have decided on a Friday night wedding next May. It is really important to him to get married in his family’s Catholic church. We have a meeting there next week and they do have our date available.
I really wanted to have an informal outdoor reception. One of my Bridesmaid or Best Man mentioned that she didn’t think the styles of a Catholic ceremony (full mass) and a casual outdoor reception (probably buffet and not a plated dinner) went well together. I see nothing wrong with it but started entertaining the idea of other venues and I was thinking about a place that has access to a patio that we could decorate with lights and guests could go outside. Any locations come to mind?

You can have whatever style of reception you want with a Catholic wedding, it is completely up to you. I think your friend is wrong.
You don’t even need to have a huge wedding to get married in church – just you, your Fiance, witnesses and the priest/deacon is all you really NEED 🙂

Sorry, not from Pittsburgh. But I wanted to chime in that I think your friend is wrong. A casual, outdoor reception after a Catholic mass would be great!

Not sure how close you are to the city, however I wanted the same thing. Have you looked into the Zoo (i know they have an outside area/tent you can have plus its BYOB which usually helps cut cost)? We are getting married next June at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland and they have a gorgeous patio you can rent out in the front of the building? Very reasonable too. Hope that helps!

@Dainty: I’m sorry but I think you’re friend is wrong! You can have ANY type of reception you want.

If you are in the city, you can rent space at any of the parks. I would look at Schenley Cafe. They already have the tent!! Or, the University Club at Pitt has a roof top balcony. Then there is Schenley Plaza (the carousel!!)And, if you have a good amount of money, I’m pretty sure the Phipps has an outdoor space. And, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts has a tent set up on their balcony already.

I am pretty close to the city so all of your suggestions would work. I have looked into the zoo and I know you can’t have a reception there until after it is closed so that would be perfect (we’re getting married on a Friday night so the ceremony wont be starting until late afternoon/early evening.)
I am on a budget of $15,000 so I think Phipps and Soldiers & Sailors are probably out of my budget.
I’ll look into all of these- I especially love the idea of the rooftop balcony at Univ Club!
Thanks so much for all your help! 🙂

Our ceremony is outside at Roselea Farm in Moon. I know they have done receptions before and I believe you’re open to choosing your own caterer and byob. Here’s the websitehttp://www.roseleafarm.com/

Did you decide on anything???

I am between two places….the zoo and a local park. I put up a separate post last week about lighting at the zoo but have had no responses. (I haven’t had a chance to ask the woman from the zoo about the lighting…we keep playing phone tag.) I will let you know when I have made a final decision.
