    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone ever attended the Catholic Enganged Couple retreat? I'm not very religious, so I don't really know what to expect.

Also, it'll be a dorm-like facility, I heard. I've never lived in a dorm, so I don't really know what to expect. Will I have a roommate? Commuter bathroom?

Any info anyone can provide me will be greatly appreciated.

     Thanks so much

My church gave me the option of the retreat or a sponsor couple--we did the sponsor couple and it was an awesome experience. Met with them about 4 times at their home and just talked for a couple of hours. We were given a workbook and read a few chapters for each week and answered the questions in the workbook...then we just discussed our answers. It was cool because the couple answered them too...so we learned a lot about them and their relationship as well.

I would imagine you will do exercises similar to this at your retreat...it's going to be all about making sure you and your fiance have talked through the major issues in a relationship...finances, future goals, children, religion, etc. It will probably be really fun to interact with other engaged couples!

Of note, there are some chapters in the workbook about intimacy and contraception. Not sure if they'll cover it with you, but it was a bit uncomfortable! We skimmed it pretty quickly as I am not one to get into detail about that stuff with others...

In regards to dorm life, I would suggest checking to make sure they provide linens for the beds...sometimes you have to bring your own. Might want to bring an extra blanket if you tend to get cold at night...you never know what type of blanket they'll provide. Your own pillow might be helpful too. Some dorms have private bathrooms, but most are communal, so be prepared for that. Towels, toiletries in a travel container would be helpful!

Have fun! I think you'll have a great weekend...and it's such a nice way to spend some time with the person you love. You really get to open up about things that perhaps you haven't discussed at length...and you might be proud to find that you've covered most of the topics already and are on the same page!

Weazie, thanks so much for the info. That really helps.

I just realized I wrote "commuter bathroom" instead of "communal" DOH!

I just went to mine 2 weekends ago and it was a phenomenal experience!  I highly recommend it!  The format is relatively simple:  you hear talks about couple's experiences, then you have some questions to answer by yourself in a workbook, then you discuss your answers on the pertinent topics with your future spouse.  Some things we had already discussed, other things were good for us to discuss further.  Overall, it was quite wonderful!  Think of it as one long date weekend, where you actually talk about the building blocks of your relationship and future family life.

As for the facility, we went to Santa Barbara.  It was gorgeous!  It was dorm-like, but I had no roommate.  Just one giant room with dividers and curtains for each "room".  It was a very simple set up.  Don't expect any sort of hotel-like accomodations.  Bathroom was communal.  Individual stalls for restrooms and showers of course.  It was all fine.  Not the finest, but it was perfectly sufficient.  They'll definitely give you instructions on what items to bring prior to the retreat.

I'm sure it will be fantastic, so I wish you all the best!  Just keep an open heart and an open mind!
