I visited the Melia Cayo Santa Maria in 2004 send it is a nice 4 star with an amazing beach an large pool.  We visited the iberostar Ensenachos in 2010 and it was Amazing.  At the time it was adults only.  We upgraded to the premium villa section with a butler and access to the premium restaurant with lobster everyday! The beach was also the best I have seen in the world ( I have been to Australia and all over the Caribbean)

@Bri1o:  we went to that area about 4 years ago (can’t remember the resort) and the beach was stunning.  i would suggest checking out to see the reviews.

@Bri1o:  Both resorts have a bit of a walk to the beach but are very nice.  The Iberostar has a raised walkway to the beach.

One thing to keep in mind about Santa Clara is the 1.5 hour bus ride from the airport.  Some people don’t know about it and freak out.  The drive is amazing! you go through little villages and on an ocean causeway.

Also if you like off the resort activities there is really not many places to go from because you are in a remote location.

I have been to the Memories at Cayo Santa Maria – I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but I wouldnt go there for my honeymoon. Of the 7 days we were there, there was only 1 day where you could go in the ocean. And even then it was red flagged every day.

The food in Cuba – well, its exactly what everyone says about the food. Not great.

I just find the weather in Cuba to be much less consistent than a place such as Mexico. I have been to Cuba a few times, and each time I enjoyed myself, however thought at least once that I wish I would have used that money to go elsewhere.

Also – everywhere I have been in Cuba had less than stellar accomodations. When I go on holiday, I like to be cozy. In Cuba 5 star is more like 3.5 star here.

Im really trying not to be too much of a debbie downer, but your honeymoon is such an exciting and special time!

I will add – the beach is second to none! Amazing. However if the weather is windy/cloudy/rainy all the time, it is hard to enjoy the sand and the beach. 30 KM/hr wind coming off of the ocean is COLD when you are in a swimsuit.

We always stay in veradero at iberostar playa alameda and we love it!  Food isn’t great but it’s worth the experience of Cuba!  We survived!

Although I havent been to  Cayo Santa Maria, I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time!  The Cuban people are truly wonderful and they love canadians!

Cayo Santa Maria is pretty remote….you will probably be confined to the resort, which is fine, but I feel like everyone who visits Cuba should get off the resort to really experience the amazing island.

Havana is a must see!!
