I personally like the luminaries better. The floating candles have been done before and I think there is more versatility with the luminaries. Good luck!
I love the luminaries.. they're gorgeous! you might want to check with the venue first though - my sister was going to do that for her wedding but had to change - something about a fire hazard?
Thanks for the replies! nybride09, I thought about the fire hazard thing.... the hotel says no open candles on the tables. So if we did the luminarias we'd have to buy those LED flickering tealights. Not sure how that rule applies to the floating candles though.
Hey everyone! I just wanted to post a pic of some luminarias I tried at home. I bought white paper bags and some stamps at Michael's, and just played around. What do you think?
Edited: Ok, I can't upload photos right now for some reason. I'll try again later.
Ok, here's another try at posting photos of the luminarias I made.
love the luminaries. i am probably going to do some for a wedding that i have as outdoor decor on a terrace and a circular driveway.... i love the simple elegance of these!!
Luminaries for sure! They are not your typical floating candles - a lot of brides do that . I love this idea, it is a little something you wouldn't see at every other wedding!!
Why not both? They both seem like low-cost options! So why not the candles on the tables, and accent the outer points of the reception with the luminaries?
Both! I'm doing votives on the tables and lining the pation with luminarias.
Following Martha's guidelines, I made luminary-style vases. They were super easy to set up because we'd done all the work ahead of time, and they allowed candles, so you don't have to worry about your LEDs fritzing out. (I use some at work and they're awful. I'm sure they're old and beat up and were probably the cheapest option, but they made me discount the idea of LED candles.)

I wrote about them here.
I agree, do both! Half your table with floating candles, half with luminares. That will not only help you control costs a bit but you'll have a nice mix of lighting throughout your venue!
I like the luminaries provided that the venue lighting isn't too bright, otherwise they just look like paper bags.
OH and I forgot to say: WELCOME to Weddingbee. Hope you love it here
Love the floating candles -- but both are pretty. Could you use one for centerpieces and the other as reception decor?
I am punching a design out of white paper bags and floating them on lily pads in our pond for our wedding. I plan on using small white glow sticks instead of regular or battery candles. The pond is huge and a small distance from our reception area. I figure the glow sticks will give them more visuality! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Hi there! I love this site and this is my first post!
I am currently undecided about my centerpieces. Oringinally I was going to do floating candles (and maybe some petals or flowers) in a rose bowl - the bowls would be loaned to me by a friend, so the cost would only be for candles/flowers, and maybe some gems at the bottom. Something like this, maybe:
Now I'm wondering about luminarias, because I like the look of those too. I was thinking about doing some in vellum, or maybe plain white paper bags, and then DIY-ing a few designs and printing it so that they're personalized. We would do a few on each table, and then we could put the rest all over the reception venue. In that case we would have to buy the paper bags or vellum, and then tealights or those fake flickering lights. The cost of those would also be really low, so that's not a deciding factor between the two centerpieces.
Any advice? Any suggestions? I feel like the luminarias would be easier to set up and take down, and there's no water to deal with. Plus they also echo the centerpieces at my favourite restaurant that we go to, which would be a personal touch (except that no one else would make the connection).
