I went to West Elm today and found these cake stands that I REALLY like!!!! I thought it would be amazing as a centrepiece, and also double as dessert, because i could put little cakes into them at each table. I wasn’t planning on getting a wedding cake anyways, so thought this would be a great alternative. However, they are 35 a piece, and I’ll need about 20? Does this sound too expensive?! I am budgeting a 10-12000 dollar wedding for 140 people so don’t know if this is too extravagant a purchase… ironically it will be the FIRST wedding thing I buy!

I think this is such a cute idea- my sister considered it for a bit.
Personally, I think it’s extremely economical. $35 is actually on the low end for centerpieces (from what I’ve seen), and you also save money on dessert!

I agree, $35 isn’t TOO bad for centerpieces and it’s nice that you’ll be saving on desserts! Plus you should probs be able to resell the cake stands on the Classifieds section here, lots of brides are looking for them 🙂
If you decide $35 is too much but you still want cake stands for centerpieces, you should look at consignment stores and thrift stores, I’ve been collecting vintage glass cake stands for our sweets table – they look a lot like this:
And so far they’ve only costed $3 to $5 each.

I think it’s a great idea but I wouldn’t budget $600 for cakestands. Many bees have paid much less than $35 each for centerpieces.
What are you going to do with those 20 cake stands after the wedding.
If I really wanted them I would do a DIY. Do you have a pic of the cake stand you love?
If it’s the one with the hammered metal case, you can easily do that with a bathroom tumbler and a glass plate.
Here’s a great tutorial for all kinds of cakestands.
ps before you start purchasing, I would make sure our vision for your decor is firmly set in your mind.

@julies1949: Thanks for your input! I actually decided to sleep on it, then went home and talked with my fiance about it, which turned out to be a GReAT thing, because he actually had some INPUT! lol. He’s a very casual guy that will probably let me do anything, as long as it doesn’t cost too much and it’s fun. But he thought that it would be neat if the centrepieces represented something about us specifically, and I agree! So we decided to go in a completely different direction, but might get just TWO of these cake stand centrepieces for our head table, to differentiate it from the rest! 🙂

These are a great find!! You should totally go for it. I did decide NOT to buy them after all, even though I love them – there are better ideas, like you said, that would be more cost efficient! Definitely keeping with a Mason Jar theme, which I can collect for free/cheap, and fill them with some really cool DIY art and structures!
