Is there an event coordinator at the venue? They might be able to tell you what other brides have done at that venue in the past.
That being said, I think that cocktail hour is what your guests are supposed to do while the couple & the wedding party & parents get photos. Maybe you can arrange for cocktail hour to be hosted in the restaurant? How much rearranging do they have to do to convert your ceremony area to a reception area? I went to a wedding once where they had the tables set up for the reception, and the couple got married on a stage at the front of the ballroom. They passed some appetizers and served drinks while they had photos and everyone had a great time.
My venue of choice also has an indoor ceremony/reception area that would share the same space. They have an area for cocktail hour that all the guests would go to wait..like a lounge type area. Ask your venue what they do!! :)

I'm having my ceremony and wedding reception in the same room, my situation is a little different then some of the ones I've read on here. My situation is this...we will have the ceremony and then once the ceremony was over I planned on leaving with the bridal party and parents to go get pictures done. Then come back to the venue for cocktail hr before dinner but our venure requires an hr to set up the reception area. This is why we decided the would be a good time to get our pictures done. I'm just not sure what to do with the guests that won't be coming to get photos done. There is a restaurant in the venue, or is it even my responsiblity to worry about that??? Please help!!!
